Andava numa azáfama a preparar a minha primeira jam, quando surgiu a possibilidade de um último participante.
Rote e Amor referiram que estava por cá um writer canadiano que pintava há uma porrada de anos, que gostaria de participar e que era mesmo "pesado".
No fim de semana do evento, o meu convidado trouxe a qualidade da sua caligrafia e do seu estilo wildstyle e também a sua boa disposição. Como condição, ficou combinado que daria uma entrevista para o blog.
Para Fresco foi a "cereja no topo do bolo" das suas férias e eu ganhei mais uma entrevista. A primeira de mais 100, assim espero.
Como surgiu o teu tag?
O meu tag surgiu quando estive em Portugal em 1997. Sempre adorei o nome Fresh, mas nunca o escrevi porque havia outro (“Phresh” de NYC, que escrevia Fresh). Quando percebi que fresco significava "fresh", fez todo o sentido usar essa palavra como meu nome!
Tens formação em arte?
Sou autodidata nas formas mágicas da expressão visual! Tenho outros membros da família que também são muito artísticos.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
1993 foi o ano que me cativou! Souls of mischief - 93 til infinity. 93 foi o ano em que chocalhei uma lata de spray pela primeira vez, influenciado pelo hip-hop. Bateu desde o primeiro dia!
Quais são suas as tuas crews?
As minhas crews são os Blu Bla e The Mexican Calligraphers. BLUBLA desde 2016 e TMC desde 2020.
Como descreves a cena do graffiti no Canadá? Que diferenças encontras em relação a Portugal?
A cena no Canadá está a crescer. Temos muitos artistas / writers talentosos aqui. Embora o Canadá seja e sempre tenha sido um pouco mais influenciado pela sociedade ocidental do que pela Europa. A Europa tem um esquema muito mais progressista. O Ocidente é menos progressista e mais vândalo. A Europa parece aproveitar mais o aspeto artístico de escrever letras do que o aspeto vândalo da escrita rápida. O oeste é selvagem e o leste é mais tranquilo. A cultura é mais madura na Europa em comparação com a América do Norte e a sociedade ocidental. O Canadá ainda precisa de amadurecer e de se desenvolver.
Já pintaste em quantos países?
Pintei em 20 países e 4 continentes.
Qual foi o local mais incrível em que já pintaste? O local mais incrível em que pintei foi a margem de um rio, não muito longe da minha casa no Canadá! Extremamente majestoso e bonito, com floresta e água potável super limpa. Também pintei em Stockwell, Londres, o que foi bastante emocionante, bem como nalguns restos do Muro de Berlim, em 1997.
Já participaste em vários festivais e jams. Houve algum que te marcou em particular? Shambhala é, de longe, o melhor festival para mim! Eu amo aquele lugar!
O que puxa por ti hoje em dia? Wall of fame, street bombing ou train bombing?
Todos os aspetos do Graffiti me motivam, mas a única coisa que me impulsiona a destacar-me e a avançar na minha jornada é conhecer pessoas lindas e incríveis! Fazer novos amigos é o que eleva isto ao próximo nível para mim. Pessoas!
Numa palavra, como defines o teu estilo?
Numa palavra, eu diria Metallica! 🤘🏽
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle? Eu faço sempre as minhas letras em freestyle. Se estou a fazer personagens e um mural completo com um tema, então faço um pré-esboço.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas? Eu amo o meu material de jazz / hip hop / instrumental para entrar nas vibrações criativas. E gosto de música eletrónica para entrar nas minhas letras wildstyle.
Quais são os ingredientes para um bom dia de pintura? Os ingredientes certos não são muitos. Tinta, tempo seco, algo húmido e frio para lubrificar as minhas engrenagens, uma superfície para pintar, uma boa música e por último, mas não menos importante, amigos divertidos e amorosos para participar!

O que te mantém forte na tua ligação ao movimento?
O que me mantém fortemente conectado à cultura é permanecer envolvido e conectado com os meus colegas que são uma grande parte da cultura e continuar a destacar-me na minha arte.

Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Tenho uma bela visão e um projeto em andamento em Portugal que gostaria de lançar e expor até ao verão de 2025. Não posso dizer muito, mas posso dizer que, se tudo correr como espero, será mais um capítulo da cultura que já existe na Europa! Espero unir as pessoas e ajudá-las a expor e apresentar um ótimo ambiente para que o façam!
Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?
Eu tenho uma história recente da minha última viagem à Europa. Eu estava em Stockwell, Londres, com o meu amigo Chips, a pintar, e estávamos a pintar até altas horas da manhã. Eu estava a tocar dubstep alto, totalmente envolvido com a minha arte, e, nesse momento, eu estava a dançar, a cantar e a gritar enquanto pintava, esquecendo-me de onde estava. Como deves saber, Stockwelll foi e ainda é hoje um bairro mais violento. Às 2h30 fui abordado por um homem de 2,10 metros, com um toque no ombro. Fiquei em estado de choque, ao ver quem se tinha aproximado de mim, e o indivíduo pediu-me educadamente para baixar o volume da música. Ele não me pediu para desligar, apenas para baixar. Eu respondi, imediatamente, com "sinto muito" e continuei, desligando a música.
Poderia ter sido uma situação assustadora. Felizmente, não foi. Acho que com a atitude certa e humildade tudo pode ser alcançado. Até pintar às 3h da manhã em Stockwell com Dubstep a tocar alto!! 🤣🤣🤣😎💪🏽❤️

I was busy preparing my first jam, when the possibility of one last participant came up. Rote and Amor mentioned that there was a Canadian writer here who had been painting for a lot of years, who would like to participate and who was really "heavy". During the weekend of the event, my guest brought the quality of his calligraphy and his wildstyle and also his good disposition. As a condition, it was agreed that he would give me an interview for the blog. For Fresco it was the "icing on the cake" of his vacation and I won another interview. The first of 100 more, I hope.
How did your tag come about?
My tag came about when I was in Portugal in 1997. I always loved the name fresh, but never wrote it because there was another (“phresh” from NYC, who wrote fresh). When I realized fresco meant fresh it made absolute sense for me to use that word as my name!
Do you have training in art?
I am self taught in the wizard ways of visual expression! I have other family members who are very artistic as well.
When did your interest in graffiti begin and what were your influences at the time?
1993 was the year that captivated me! Souls of mischief - 93 til infinity. 93 was the year I first rattled a spray can. Hip-hop influenced. Down from day 1!
What are your crews?
My crews are Blu Bla & The Mexican Calligraphers. BLUBLA from 2016 and TMC from 2020.
How would you describe the current graffiti scene in Canada? What differences do you find in relation to Portugal?
The scene in Canada is growing. We have many talented artists/writers here. Although Canada is and has always been a little more influence from western society other then europe. Europe has a much more progressive scheme. The west is less progressive and more of a vandalizing thing. Europe seems to harness the art aspect of writing letters more then the quick vandal aspect of writing. The west is wild, and the east is more tranquil. The culture is more mature in Europe compared to North America and western society. Canada yet has to mature and develop.
How many countries have you painted in?
I have painted in 20 countries and 4 continents.
What was the most incredible spot you’ve ever painted?
The most incredible spot I’ve ever painted in is a river bank not far from my house in Canada! Extremely majestic and beautiful with over grown forest and super clean drinkable water from the river.
I’ve also painted Stalkwell London which was pretty exciting, as well as some of the remains of the Berlin Wall in 1997.
You've been to several festivals and graffiti jams. Was there one that marked you in particular?
Shambhala is by far the best festival for me! I love that place!
What drives you these days? Wall of fame, street bombing or train bombing?
All aspect of Graffiti drive me, but the one thing that pushes me to excel and further my journey, is meeting all the amazing beautiful people! Making new friends is what takes it to the next level for me. People!
In a word, how do you define your style?
In a word, I would have to say Metallica! 🤘🏽
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?
I freestyle my letters always. If I’m doing characters and a full mural with theme, then I’ll pre-sketch.
What plays on your playlist when you paint?
I love my jazz / hip hop / instrumental stuff for getting into the creative vibes. I like electronic bass music for breaking out into my wildstyle lettering.
What are the ingredients for a good painting day?
The right ingredients isn’t really much. Paint, dry weather, something wet and cold to lubricate my gears, a surface to paint, some good music and last but not least fun loving friends to join!

Which writer would you like to do a joint piece with?
Sauté all day.
What keeps you strong in your connection to the movement?
What keeps me strongly connected to the culture is staying involved and connected to my peers who are a large part of the culture and continuing to excel in my art.
Also sharing my work online helps keep me connected.
What are your future plans/projects?
I have a beautiful vision and project on the go in Portugal I would like to launch and exhibit by summer 2025. I cant say to much, but I can say that if everything works out as I hope, it will be another chapter to the culture that already exists in Europe! I hope to unite people and help them exhibit and showcase with a great environment for them to do so!
Do you have a story you want to share?
I do have a story from just recently on my last tour to Europe. I was in Stockwell, London, with my friend Chips painting, and we were painting into the early hours of the morning. I was playing loud dubstep. Totally into my art and moment I was dancing and singing and hollering while painting forgetting where I was. As you may know Stalkwell was and still is to this day a rougher neighbourhood. At 2:30 am I was approached by a 7ft talk male, with a tap to the shoulder. In shock to see who had approached me, the individual politely asked me to turn down the music. He didn’t even ask me to turn it off, but just turn it down. I immediately replied with. I’m very sorry and then continue to turn off the music. It could have been a scary situation. Thankfully it wasn’t. I think with the right attitude and humility anything can be achieved. Even painting at 3.00 am at Stalkwell with loud Dubstep playing!! 🤣🤣🤣😎💪🏽❤️
