Foi numa passagem por Santo André que conheci SalDoce, numa jam que teve lugar durante a 8ª Edição do Festival das Cores.
Mais tarde, voltámos a cruzar-nos na Póvoa de Santa Iria, numa jam do Magus.
O artista / writer integra os NoArtLimit e os O1K.
Conhecido pelos seus characters, o meu convidado também é um fã do lettering.
SalDoce gosta de pintar na Grande Lisboa e pela costa alentejana, na companhia de Obar, Eko e, mais recentemente, Odeith, Vile e Wek!.
Enquanto esperamos por novidades, fiquem com a sua entrevista.
Como surgiu o teu tag?
Olá para quem lê. :)
Então, eu pintei em 99 e 2000 mas como não havia guita comecei a ter interesse por outras coisas e deixei a prática do graffiti de lado, mantendo-me sempre a par de uma série de eventos e actividades.
Quando comecei a namorar a minha actual esposa, em 2010, ela estudava em Faro e quis fazer-lhe uma surpresa por lá. Comprei umas latas na “Samadi” (Dolce Vita) e quando fui ter com ela numa tarde em que ela estava na faculdade, como era normal nas minhas folgas, procurei um muro e pintei um Doce (que é a forma como nos tratamos desde sempre). Ela adorou, mas não sabia o que isso ia dar... Nesse mesmo dia propus-lhe a ela e a uma colega dela irem comigo, à noite, gastar o resto das latas. Como a minha alcunha era salsicha e toda a gente me chamava Sal, pintei dois Sal nessa noite e quando me apercebi que já não conseguia parar de pintar e precisava de um tag foi só pensar no que já tinha feito (Sal e Doce).
SalDoce era a melhor junção de sempre para mim.
Tens formação em arte?
Não tenho formação nenhuma. Nem o 12º terminei, ahah.
Estive em artes no 10° ano. Desenho desde que me conheço e sempre gostei muito de o fazer.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Vivia na Amadora e o meu quintal terminava basicamente na linha no comboio. Entre Amadora e Queluz. Vi aparecer e crescer toda a actividade naquela zona e também quando andava de comboio, fosse para Sintra ou Lisboa.
As influências vinham todas daí. Mish, Unte, Bold, Ceya, 1003pv e 3M Dome, Capone, Abel e tinha um amigo que já pintava (que era o Zepo) mas era bem mais velho e só soube que pintava bem depois de eu começar, malta de Queluz, Coer também já pintava.
Um amigo que começou a pintar no mesmo dia que eu foi o Phido. Ao segundo Graff na parede notou-se logo uma diferença abismal. Desenhava pa crl.
Antes de comprar as primeiras latas fazia muitos sketches no papel. Em 99 comprei as primeiras latas numa loja em Queluz, perto do jardim que não lembro o nome, e pintei em 99 e 2000. Pintei com o tag de Bone e Cirm e ainda cheguei a pintar na Costa da Caparica, porque tirando isso era sempre na linha entre Amadora e Queluz, ahah.
Depois, como já referi, larguei a actividade e só voltei em 2010. Por isso é que digo sempre que comecei a pintar em 2010.
Mas tenho um álbum de fotos das máquinas de rolo típicas da altura, analógicas, tiradas por mim no evento em 2001 em que estiveram os Gémeos, How&Nosm, Sken, Nark, etc. Um outro evento na escola Secundária da Amadora, já bem mais tarde, onde esteve o Mister, o Per, o Malig (que soube há meses que não era o Mulog, confirmado por ele) e outros writers... ainda registei algumas coisas fixes que guardo até hoje.
Como era a cena no graffiti quando começaste?
O meu início foi com dois amigos. Não me dava com ninguém para além deles. Não era de ir para a rua fazer amigos. No início, pintava com o Phido e com um amigo, o Bruno, que não me lembro do tag.
Sendo que em actividade foram apenas ali uns dois anos, se tanto, não tenho grande opinião sobre essa altura. Mas, pelo que via, era brutal. Só cenas a aparecer, muito spot para pintar, peças lindas de morrer, grandes cores.
Adorava uma peça que apareceu do Nark, a verde, com dois porcos... mítica. Tenho foto 10/15 dela também.
Pertences a alguma crew?
Logo no início, quando voltei a pintar, procurei festas que tivessem graffiti para ir e tentar conhecer pessoas / writers (tentando ser o contrário daquilo que sou, um bicho do mato, ahah), pois não conhecia mesmo ninguém quando voltei a pintar. Lá encontrei um amigo (o A2, que era como o conhecia) que fazia umas cenas de música e que conheci através de um irmão meu, uns anos atrás... foi brutal saber que ele pintava. Trocámos contactos logo ali e combinámos pintar. Logo na primeira pintura ele trouxe o Gul e a Moa. A partir desse dia, comecei a pintar com eles 3. O A2 é o Reckan, um dos maiores skills que já conheci. Mais tarde entra o Aserio. Esta foi a crew que sempre considerei uma família. Nunca formámos uma crew com nome.
Quase ao mesmo tempo, um dia estou em Sto. André, litoral alentejano, a minha segunda casa, e vejo o Eko a pintar com mais alguém. Contrariando o meu lado introvertido, fui lá e falei com ele (até porque ele é comunicativo) e com o outro writer, que era o Obar. Não falámos nesse dia, ele não deve ter curtido de mim no momento, ahah. Mais tarde, o Nelson (muito amigo do Obar e membro dos NoArtLimit) mandou mensagem à minha namorada, porque eram amigos de infância, a dizer que se eu quisesse lá pintar tinha as paredes que quisesse e era sempre bem vindo. Combinámos uma pintura e o Nelson não conseguiu ir e foi o Obar. Foi aí que nós conhecemos. Ao Nelson conheci-o pouco tempo depois.
Não demorou muito tempo a surgir o convite para entrar para a família que é os NoArtLimit. Acolheram-me de uma forma espetacular logo em 2011. Hoje são dos meus melhores amigos.
Mais tarde, no verão de 2014, formei uma crew com o Shao (de Sines, meu irmão também), os O1K. Convidámos logo o Adose de Sines e o Aceso de Pegões e mais tarde entrou o Ato do norte.
O que preferes? Lettering ou characters?
Gosto mais de caras. Mas volta e meia faço letras, para desanuviar. Parece que pintar letras me ajuda a descansar (mesmo fisicamente) de pintar caras. Parece não fazer sentido, mas é o que sinto.
Mas adoro letras. Só não faço mais porque acho que não sei fazê-las como gostaria de as fazer. Por preguiça, claro. Bastava desenhar... ahah.
Como é o teu processo criativo e onde vais buscar as inspirações para as tuas peças?
Olha, nem eu sei bem. Caras pinto aquilo que gosto de ver... se for alguém conhecido será alguém que aprecio de alguma forma ou porque faz sentido para a jam, como aconteceu com o Jimi Hendrix. Letras vou desenhando à medida que vou pintando. Lamentavelmente, não tenho o hábito nem o gosto de estar sempre a desenhar.
Daí também nunca ter tido a capacidade de ir em busca de um estilo próprio. Gosto de pintar e pronto. As letras naturalmente que acabam por ter um influência dos anos 90/2000, porque foi lá que mais desenhei e absorvi estilos e letras.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Fame é sempre com sketch. Não sou muito criativo. Tenho sempre de olhar para coisas que já desenhei para mudar algo aqui e ali. As faces como são caras que existem é sempre com imagem impressa ou no telemóvel.
Ilegal é que é sempre free... mas também é sempre o mesmo. Volta e meio lá mudo algo, mas não muda muito.
Quais são os teus spots / cidades preferidos?
Não tenho. Pinto em qualquer sítio da mesma forma. Hoje, como sofro bastante com problemas nas costas, só preciso de estar confortável no sítio. Ou seja, ter o meu escadote, um sítio para colocar as latas e não ter de me agachar para as apanhar do chão... esse tipo de coisas que para mim fazem a diferença.
Preferes pintar sozinho ou acompanhado?
Acompanhado, mas quando “é preciso” pinto sozinho. Se tiver cans e passar num sítio bacano páro, aponto o telemóvel, ponho a filmar e bota a baixo... já agora, tenho um prazer enorme em filmar tudo o que faço, edito e tenho tudo em privado no meu YouTube. Um dia destes lanço algo.
Pinto sozinho facilmente. Mas não curto.
Quais são os ingredientes para um bom dia de pinturas?
Boa gente... acho que não é preciso muito mais. Vá, se puder parar para sentar em algum restaurante e voltar é ouro sobre azul. O Obar sabe bem do que falo, ahah.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Ei, pá, acho que nem devia falar sobre isso... ahah. Toca rap tuga maioritariamente, porque não percebo nada de inglês e gosto de cantarolar e fazê-lo em inglês é ridículo... mas depois tenho de tudo... pelo meio toca sertanejo, rock, fado, pop.. é uma cultura musical que só visto, ahahah.
Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti em Portugal?
Olha, não tenho grande opinião.
Acho que está fixe. Como em tudo, há situações com que não concordamos. Pessoas que têm posturas e opiniões um pouco mais controversas e até algumas pessoas que se acham mais que os outros, mas, como disse, isso faz parte e existe em todas as áreas. Não me afeta em nada.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers / artistas portugueses?
O que mais curto ver são letras, como falei la atrás. Gostava de ter metade do skill destes 3 mestres:
Bray, Nark e Atsok e tenho de colocar aqui o Geks.
E de writers / artistas estrangeiros?
Does, Musa e Odeith.
Com que writer / artista gostarias de fazer uma peça conjunta?
Ui, tantos, ahah... conjunta não tenho grande paciência para tal, porque, como disse, sou uma beca bicho do mato e sou individualista. Mas isto não quer dizer que não o faça. Farei com quem um dia o quiser fazer, como já aconteceu com outras pessoas. Como no último ano tenho pintado com pessoas que achei que nunca iria pintar, isso já me deixou concretizado. Depois chegamos à conclusão que para além de serem pessoas impecáveis, pintar ao lado deles é pintar ao deles... sem nunca esquecer o agradecimento. Sou muito grato pelo último ano.
Qual é aquela que consideras a tua melhor peça, aquela que te deu mais luta e aquela que ainda te falta fazer?
A que considero a melhor é uma parede da Marvel que fiz num local abandonado, há quase 10 anos.
Aquilo correu-me tão bem e, estupidamente, nunca mais fiz algo do género, ahah.
Essa foi também a que me deu mais luta. Demorei 5 dias a fazer aquilo.
A que me falta fazer é todas as que me apetecer.
Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Tenho um objetivo mas apenas meu e para mim. Tirando isso, quero pintar sem stressar e sem stressar ninguém.
Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?
As melhores histórias que guardo foram as que contei no início. Para mim, como tudo começou são as melhores histórias.

How did your tag come about? Hello to anyone reading. :) So, I painted in 99 and 2000 but as there was no money I started to be interested in other things and I left the practice of graffiti aside, always keeping up to date with a series of events and activities. When I started dating my current wife, in 2010, she was studying in Faro and I wanted to surprise her there. I bought some cans at “Samadi” (Dolce Vita) and when I went to see her one afternoon when she was at college, as was normal on my days off, I looked for a wall and painted a Doce (which is how we have always treated each other). She loved it, but she didn't know what would happen... That same day I suggested that she and a colleague of hers go with me, at night, to use up the rest of the cans. As my nickname was Salsicha and everyone called me Sal, I painted two Sal that night and when I realized that I couldn't stop painting and needed a tag, I just thought about what I had already done (Sal and Doce). SalDoce was the best combination ever for me. Do you have training in art? I don't have any training. I didn't even finish the 12th, ahah. I studied arts in 10th grade. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember and I’ve always really enjoyed doing it. When did your interest in graffiti begin and what were your influences at the time? I lived in Amadora and my yard basically ended at the train line. Between Amadora and Queluz. I saw all the activity appear and grow in that area and also when I took the train, whether to Sintra or Lisbon. The influences all came from there. Mish, Unte, Bold, Ceya, 1003pv and 3M Dome, Capone, Abel and I had a friend who already painted (which was Zepo) but he was much older and only knew he could paint well after I started, guys from Queluz, Coer also painted.
A friend who started painting on the same day as me was Phido. The second Graff on the wall immediately noticed an abysmal difference. He drew as well as anything.
Before buying the first cans I made a lot of sketches on paper. In 99 I bought the first cans in a store in Queluz, close to the garden that I don't remember the name of, and I painted in 99 and 2000. I painted with the tag Bone and Cirm and I even painted in Costa da Caparica, because other than that it was always on the line between Amadora and Queluz, ahah. Then, as I already mentioned, I left the activity and only returned in 2010. That's why I always say that I started painting in 2010.
But I have an album of photos of the typical analogue roller machines of the time, taken by me at the event in 2001 where Gémeos, How&Nosm, Sken, Nark, etc. were present. Another event at Amadora Secondary School, much later, where Mister, Per, Malig (who I knew months ago was not Mulog, confirmed by him) and other writers were present... I still recorded some cool things which I still have to this day.
What was the graffiti scene like when you started?
My beginning was with two friends. I didn't get along with anyone other than them. I wasn't one to go out on the street and make friends. In the beginning, I painted with Phido and a friend, Bruno, whose tag I don't remember.
Since it was only active there for a couple of years, if that, I don't have much of an opinion about that time. But from what I saw, it was brutal. Just scenes appearing, lots of spots to paint, gorgeous pieces, great colors.
I loved a piece that appeared from Nark, the green one, with two pigs... mythical. I have a 10/15 photo of her too.
Do you belong to a crew?
Right at the beginning, when I started painting again, I looked for parties that had graffiti to go to and try to meet people / writers (trying to be the opposite of what I am, a wild animal, ahah), because I didn't really know anyone when I started painting again. There I met a friend (A2, that's how I knew him) who did some music scenes and who I met through a brother of mine, a few years ago... it was brutal knowing that he painted. We exchanged contact details right there and agreed to paint. In the first painting he brought Gul and Moa. From that day on, I started painting with the 3 of them. A2 is Reckan, one of the greatest skills I've ever known. Later Aserio enters. This was the crew that I always considered family. We never formed a crew with a name.
Almost at the same time, one day I am in Sto. André, Alentejo coast, my second home, and I see Eko painting with someone else. Contrary to my introverted side, I went there and spoke to him (because he is communicative) and to the other writer, who was Obar. We didn't speak that day, he must not have liked me at the time, ahah. Later, Nelson (a good friend of Obar and a member of NoArtLimit) sent a message to my girlfriend, because they were childhood friends, saying that if I wanted to paint there I could have whatever walls I wanted and I was always welcome. We agreed on a painting and Nelson couldn't go and it was Obar. That's when we met. I met Nelson shortly afterwards.
It didn't take long for the invitation to join the NoArtLimit family to appear. They welcomed me in a spectacular way in 2011. Today they are one of my best friends.
Later, in the summer of 2014, I formed a crew with Shao (from Sines, my brother too), the O1K. We immediately invited Adose from Sines and Aceso from Pegões and later Ato from North joined.
What do you prefer? Lettering or characters?
I like faces more. But every now and then I write letters, to clear the air. It seems that painting letters helps me rest (even physically) from painting faces. It doesn't seem to make sense, but that's how I feel.
But I love letters, I just don't do them anymore because I think I don't know how to do them the way I would like to do them. Out of laziness, of course. All I had to do was draw... ahah.
What is your creative process like and where do you get inspiration for your pieces?
Look, I don't even know. Faces I paint what I like to see... if it's someone I know, it will be someone I appreciate in some way or because it makes sense for the jam, like what happened with Jimi Hendrix. I draw letters as I paint. Unfortunately, I don't have the habit or the pleasure of always drawing.
That's why I never had the ability to search for my own style. I like to paint and that's it. The letters naturally end up having an influence from the 90s/2000s, because that's where I drew and absorbed styles and letters the most.
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?
Fame is always with a sketch. I'm not very creative. I always have to look at things I've already designed to change something here and there. The faces that exist are always with a printed image or on a cell phone.
Illegal is that it's always free... but it's also always the same. Every now and then I change something, but it doesn't change much.
What are your favorite spots / cities?
I don't have. I paint anywhere in the same way. Today, as I suffer a lot from back problems, I just need to be comfortable in my place. In other words, having my stepladder, a place to put the cans and not having to bend down to pick them up from the floor... those kinds of things that make a difference for me.
Do you prefer to paint alone or with others?
Accompanied, but when “necessary” I paint alone. If I have cans and I go to a nice place, I stop, point my cell phone, start filming and put it down... by the way, I take great pleasure in filming everything I do, editing and having everything privately on my YouTube. One of these days I'll release something.
I paint alone easily. But I don't like it.
What are the ingredients for a good painting day?
Good people... I don't think much more is needed. Well, if you can stop to sit in a restaurant and come back it's gold on blue. Obar knows exactly what I'm talking about, aha.
What plays on your playlist when you paint?
Hey, man, I don't think I should even talk about that... ahah. I mostly play Tuga rap, because I don't understand any English and I like to hum and doing it in English is ridiculous... but then I have everything... in between, I play country music, rock, fado, pop... it's a musical culture I just saw it, ahah.
How would you describe the current graffiti scene in Portugal?
Look, I don't have much of an opinion.
I think it's cool. As with everything, there are situations that we do not agree with. People who have slightly more controversial stances and opinions and even some people who think they are more than others, but, as I said, this is part of it and exists in all areas. It doesn't affect me at all.
What is your top 3 Portuguese writers/artists?
The hardest thing to see are letters, as I said earlier. I would like to have half the skill of these 3 masters: Bray, Nark and Atsok and I have to put Geks here.
And foreign writers/artists?
Does, Muse and Odeith.
Which writer/artist would you like to do a joint piece with?
Wow, so many, ahah... I don't have much patience for that, because, as I said, I'm a wild animal and I'm an individualist. But that doesn't mean you don't do it. I will do it with whoever wants to do it one day, as has happened with other people. As in the last year I have been painting with people I thought I would never paint, this has already made me fulfilled. Then we came to the conclusion that in addition to being impeccable people, painting alongside them is painting alongside them... without ever forgetting to be grateful. I am very grateful for the last year.
What do you consider to be your best piece, the one that gave you the most struggle and the one you still have left to do?
The one I consider the best is a Marvel wall that I made in an abandoned place, almost 10 years ago. That went so well for me and, stupidly, I never did anything like that again, ahah.
This was also the one that gave me the most struggle. It took me 5 days to do that. What I need to do is as many as I want.
What are your future plans / projects?
I have a goal but only mine and for me. Apart from that, I want to paint without stressing or stressing anyone.
Do you have a story you want to share?
The best stories I keep were the ones I told at the beginning. For me, how it all started are the best stories.
