Nark (Hugo Pinhão) nasceu em Lisboa no ano de 1979 e cresceu com a realidade dos bairros degradados da capital.
Sempre se interessou por artes, tendo realizado um curso profissional de Conservação e Restauro de estuques decorativos. Posteriormente realizou um mestrado na mesma área.
Iniciou-se no graffiti em 1998, tendo participado em diversos concursos e eventos do género. Mais tarde, profissionalizou-se nessa área e começou a realizar
trabalhos comissionados.
A essa profissão artística aliou uma nova vertente, a tatuagem, tendo já recebido diversos prémios em eventos nacionais e internacionais.
Nark faz parte da crew CPK (Crime Productions Krew), a que também pertence o writer Eky, outro dos meus entrevistados.
Qual é o significado do teu tag?
Nark é o abreviativo de Narkótico, alcunha do bairro. O nome veio pelo facto de me dar com todo o tipo de pessoas, sendo por vezes criticado por isso.
Tens formação em arte?
Sim, tenho. Tenho curso profissional de conservação do património e mestrado de conservação e reabilitação de edifícios históricos.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
O meu interesse pelo graffiti surgiu com a cultura americana e os videoclipes dos anos 90, até conhecer um grupo de artistas e me envolver no movimento. Durante esse período, frequentava a escola profissional onde tinha aulas de pintura mural e, como se não bastasse, uma das aulas foi sobre Graffiti. Quando vi os comboios pintados, fui nesse mesmo dia fazer o meu primeiro train no Cacém, às 16h. 😅 Mordeu o bicho.
Como era a cena no graffiti quando começaste?
A cena do graffiti era forte na linha de Sintra e Carcavelos. Não havia tantos writers mas havia muita qualidade.
Quais são as tuas crews?
Comecei com MVW (Most Valuable Writers) com o meu master, Nimus.
Preferes a máquina de tatuagens ou a lata de spray?
Não consigo escolher... sempre foi o graffiti em primeiro, mas, com o tempo, a tattoo foi ganhando o seu lugar.
Street bombing ou a empena de um edifício?
Bombing é algo espontâneo, que sai no momento, pelo menos falo por mim. Pinto sempre em freestyle seja bombing ou fame, essa é a minha verdadeira felicidade, a criação no momento e nisso o bombing é rei.
As fachadas, quando são trabalhos pagos, tem o escrutínio de quem manda mas, felizmente, tenho conseguido levar a minha avante.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Freestyle.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Moob Deep, Wc and the Maad Circle, Geto Boys, Nas, Cypress Hill, NWA, Evidence, Looptroop, etc...
Já pintaste noutros países?
Sim, felizmente o graffiti já me levou a dar a volta ao planeta. Podiam ser mais, mas as que foram foram muito gratificantes, entre as quais: Estados Unidos - LA, Bélgica - Bruxelas, Netherlands - Eindovhen, Espanha - Madrid, Ronda e Valência, Inglaterra - Londres, etc...
Já participaste numa série de festivais. Qual foi o que te deu mais gozo?
Já. O que mais gostei foi Step in the Arena Eindovhen e o Writers Delight em Lisboa e talvez o Write for Gold no Barreiro.
Já levas alguns anos ligado ao graffiti. Já viste muitos writers e crews ficarem pelo caminho. O que te mantém forte na tua ligação ao movimento?
A paixão. Quando só pintas pela fama acabas por cair mais tarde ou mais cedo. Vi tantos subir tão alto e a caírem.
Como descreves o panorama atual do(a) graffiti / street art em Portugal? O que achas que pode melhorar?
Atualmente é um movimento abusado pela street art. Foi o graff que abriu caminho ao cenário atual em que artistas plásticos, ilustradores e wannabes pintam empenas e não se deve confundir uma coisa com outra, mas infelizmente sinto que põem tudo no mesmo saco. Não vejo melhorias, pelo contrário, vejo cada vez mais gente a dizer que veio do Graffiti para se sobrevalorizar.
Que conselhos dás à nova geração de writers / artistas?
Larguem a Internet e agarrem no lápis.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers / artistas portugueses?
Dos atuais que estão no movimento são Mosaik, Odeith, Bordalo II... dos que já não pintam são Exas e o meu amigo que já partiu Nomen.
E de writers / artistas estrangeiros?
Qual é aquela que consideras a tua melhor peça, aquela que te deu mais luta e aquela que ainda te falta fazer?
Acho que a pintura que fiz para o NATO Tiger Meet 2021, em que pintei um F16 integral. Foi a minha obra prima, sendo vencedora do primeiro lugar da NATO, prémio que me enche de orgulho.
Falando de graffiti, as minhas melhores obras são as de intervenção social e dessas tenho muitas espalhadas pelo país.
Tens alguma história engraçada para contar?
Histórias são imensas, aliás o meu percurso é feito de histórias e aventuras, entre as quais ter o meu "Mestre" (patrão de restauro) a ir-me buscar à esquadra do Seixal, por ter sido apanhado a pintar comboios às 7h da manhã antes de ir trabalhar. Ao que ele me disse "quem nasce torto, tarde ou nunca se endireita". A verdade é que hoje estou onde nem sequer sonhei estar.
Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Os meus projetos passam por viajar mais e desfrutar de todos os momentos bons que a vida me proporciona.
A nível profissional ainda tenho muito para conquistar, especialmente na tattoo.
Também tenho o objetivo de expor mais e entrar nesse mundo das galerias, tudo a seu tempo.

Nark (Hugo Pinhão) was born in Lisbon in 1979 and grew up with the reality of degraded neighborhoods of the capital.

He started graffiti in 1998, having participated in several competitions and events of this kind. Later, he became a professional in this area and began to carry out commissioned work.

Nark is part of the CPK (Crime Productions Krew) crew, which also includes writer Eky, another of my interviewees.
What does your tag mean?
Nark is short for Narkotic, the neighborhood's nickname. The name came from the fact that I get along with all kinds of people, sometimes being criticized for it.
Do you have training in art?
Yes I have. I have a professional course in heritage conservation and a master's degree in conservation and rehabilitation of historic buildings.
When did your interest in graffiti began and what were your influences at the time?
My interest in graffiti began with American culture and music videos from the 90s, until I met a group of artists and got involved in the culture. During this period he attended professional school where he took mural painting classes and, as if that wasn't enough, one of the classes was on Graffiti. When I saw the painted trains, I went that same day to take my first train in Cacém, at 4pm. 😅 The animal bit.
What was the graffiti scene like when you started?
The graffiti scene was strong around Sintra and Carcavelos. There weren't that many writers but there was a lot of quality.
What are your crews? I started with MVW (Most Valuable Writers) with my master, Nimus. Do you prefer the tattoo machine or the spray can? I can't choose... graffiti was always first, but, over time, tattoos gained their place. Street bombing or the gable of a building? Bombing is something spontaneous, that comes out in the moment, at least I speak for myself. I always paint in freestyle, whether it's bombing or fame, that's my true happiness, creating in the moment and in that, bombing is king. Facades, when they are paid work, have the scrutiny of whoever is in charge but, fortunately, I have managed to get my way. Do you paint with sketch or freestyle? Freestyle.

Have you painted in other countries?
Yes, luckily graffiti has already taken me around the planet. There could be more, but those that were were very rewarding, including: United States - LA, Belgium - Brussels, Netherlands - Eindovhen, Spain - Madrid, Ronda and Valencia, England - London, etc...
You've already participated in a series of festivals. What gave you the most pleasure?
Already. What I liked most was Step in the Arena Eindovhen and Writers Delight in Lisbon and maybe Write for Gold in Barreiro.
You've been involved with graffiti for a few years now. You've seen many writers and crews fall by the wayside. What keeps you strong in your connection to the movement?
The passion. When you only paint for fame you end up falling sooner or later. I saw so many climb so high and fall.
How would you describe the current panorama of graffiti / street art in Portugal? What do you think can improve? It is currently a movement abused by street art. It was graff that paved the way for the current scenario in which visual artists, illustrators and wannabes paint gables and one shouldn't be confused with one thing for another, but unfortunately I feel like they put everything in the same bag. I don't see improvements, on the contrary, I see more and more people saying that they came from Graffiti to overvalue themselves. What advice do you give to the new generation of writers/artists? Put down the Internet and pick up your pencil. What is your top 3 Portuguese writers/artists? Of those currently in the movement are Mosaik, Odeith, Bordalo II... of those who no longer paint are Exas and my departed friend Nomen.
What do you consider to be your best piece, the one that gave you the most struggle and the one you still have left to do?
I think the painting I did for the NATO Tiger Meet 2021, in which I painted a full F16. It was my masterpiece, winning first place in NATO, an award that fills me with pride.
Speaking of graffiti, my best works are those of social intervention and I have many of these spread across the country.
Do you have a funny story to tell?
There are countless stories, in fact my journey is made up of stories and adventures, including having my "Master" (restoration boss) pick me up from the Seixal police station, because I was caught painting trains at 7am in the morning. before going to work. To which he told me "those who are born crooked, later or never straighten out". The truth is that today I am where I never even dreamed of being.
What are your future plans/projects?
My projects involve traveling more and enjoying all the good moments that life gives me.
On a professional level I still have a lot to achieve, especially in tattooing.
I also aim to exhibit more and enter the world of galleries, all in due time.
