No princípio era o Funk e as suas obras estavam espalhadas pela cidade de Évora.
Depois de ter descoberto a sua primeira peça (com Quirino), no centro da cidade, parti em busca das restantes (recorrendo à sua conta de Instagram e ao auxílio da minha sogra, na identificação dos locais).
Algum tempo mais tarde, Frame01 e Skran01 estiveram no Alentexas, para participar em duas jams com alguns membros da Drunk Masters Crew (DMC). Foi mais uma oportunidade para rever as obras de Funky, descobrir mais uns spots e passar a (re)conhecer o trabalho de Loz, Ismo ou Kunga.
Mais recentemente, numa conversa com Jaym, outro dos elementos da DMC, recebi um convite para acompanhar o grupo numa das suas sessões de pintura. Analisados os períodos de confinamento, lá consegui uma aberta para ir assistir a uma das jams do grupo na parede do Colégio dos Leões - Universidade de Évora, um dos seus sítios de eleição e onde Funky (com o apoio da crew) costuma organizar o GROSSO MODO.
Depois de uma tarde bem passada e de algumas rodadas de imperiais, resolvi convidá-los para uma entrevista conjunta.
Fiquem com as suas respostas.
Qual o significado do teu tag?
Funky O Funk é o efeito de surpresa.
Ismo O meu tag em si, na gramática portuguesa e inglesa, é considerado um sufixo. O qual, pra mim, é apenas um nome aberto a vários temas e formas de interpretação.
Jaym O meu tag vem da pronúncia da letra J em inglês e M, apesar de ter abreviado a pronúncia do M.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Funky Começou por volta de 2011, mas só comecei a pintar, mesmo seriamente, em 2014/15.
Ismo O meu interesse pelo graffiti surgiu no 9º ano. É engraçado, pois a stora tinha sugerido que pintássemos as nossas capas A3 conforme o nosso gosto e, naquele momento, já estava a descobrir melhor a cultura musical do Hip Hop em si e simplesmente juntei A mais B. Queria ser diferente e não conhecia ninguém que fizesse graffiti. Então, lancei-me prá frente.
Jaym O meu interesse começou desde muito novo (2005-2006). Quando ia, regularmente, a Lisboa e a Portimão, via inúmeros graffs de pessoal que hoje são lendas vivas e penso que isso ficou sempre comigo, até eu ter começado e ter conhecido alguns deles.
Como era a cena no graffiti quando começaste?
Funky No Alentejo, estava estagnado. Nós reanimámos a chama e criámos a nossa própria sub cultura de graff alentejano.
Ismo A cena no graffiti quando comecei, acredito que fosse muito mais física do que aquilo que é agora, menos digitalizada. Mas, de certa forma, se não o fosse, no meio onde vivia, nunca teria descoberto o graffiti como ele é. Por isso, simplesmente, por mais ou menos digitalizado que seja, graffiti é graffiti. Apesar de muita gente não ter de sair do sofá para o ver, tens de sair do sofá na mesma para o fazer e daí vem o valor. Legal ou ilegal, não é num ipad ou num pc que fazes graff.
Jaym Txi, quando comecei só pintavam o Iner e o Gera aqui. Ninguém propriamente se conhecia, era tudo muito underground.
Quais são as tuas crews?
Funky DMC.
Ismo A minha crew é a DMC. Noutras palavras, Drunk Masters Crew.
Jaym Drunk Masters Crew (DMC) e Without Truce (WT).
Quais são os teus spots / cidades preferidos?
Funky Wall of fame dos leões em Évora, onde aprendi e me diverti mais na minha vida inteira de pintura. (Se não, também adorei todas as viagens e spraycations que fiz, desde kosovo, dinamarca, cambodja e muitos mais).
Ismo Não tenho spot preferido. Seria brutal pintar à beira da praia ou um cliché qualquer desses, mas cada spot é um spot, cada um tem a sua essência, onde for e em que cidade for.
Jaym Algo que esteja à vista do público, não interessa onde é. Definitivamente, adoro Évora.
Wall of fame, Street bombing ou Train bombing?
Funky Wall of fame, abandoned spots e litrosas.
Ismo Wall of fame, provavelmente. Como Técnico Auxiliar de Saúde, não convém que os sugas dos trains me levem prá esquadra. Se não lá vou eu pró desemprego e serviço comunitário.
Jaym Faço de tudo um pouco, mas prefiro Street e Train Bombing.
Como é o teu processo criativo e onde vais buscar as tuas inspirações?
Funky Durante muito tempo, foi Cartoon máximo. Hoje em dia, já pretendo incorporar mais natureza morta, porcelana e elementos mais rebuscados. A minha vontade é sempre tentar ser fresh.
Ismo Bem, o meu processo criativo é bastante simples. Quando saio do trabalho, faço todo aquele processo que qualquer um faz: preparo qualquer coisa pra beber, enrolo um cigarro e, simplesmente, desenho. Umas vezes com um objetivo ou uma ideia formulada e outras em "freestyle".
Jaym Honestamente, nunca pensei muito sobre isso. Eu, simplesmente, penso em algo que gostaria de ver e tento-o fazer a partir da minha mente, ahah.
As minhas maiores inspirações são os writers da velha guarda que estão a evoluir constantemente, como o Rime, Revok, Mosaik, Chure e muitos mais.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers portugueses?
Ismo Mosaik, Ekoprimeiro, Chure.
E de writers estrangeiros?
Jaym Rime, Revok, Saber, Jaber, GK, Twist, Giant, Seen, Blade, Smith, Kid, Pk... Eu ficaria aqui todo o dia a mandar nomes de pessoal brutal.
Com quem gostas de pintar?
Funky Toda a gente que entenda o funk.
Ismo Com malta que puxa por ti, amigos. Se tiver alguém que me esteja a chagar, meto os fones, simplesmente. xD
Jaym Qualquer pessoa que seja boa gente. Mas, maior parte das vezes, com a minha Crew.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Funky Tudo o que faz abanar a pélvis.

Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti em Portugal?
Funky Efervescente.
Ismo Cada um na sua terrinha, infelizmente. Gostava de poder viajar mais pela tuga, pra conhecer o pessoal tanto mais old como mais new. Acho que é só esse o lado que podia ser melhor pra mim, porque, de resto, vejo que está grande parte a evoluir com grande rapidez. O que é ótimo.
Jaym Eu acho que o Graffiti em Portugal está a crescer a um nível enorme. Porém, estão-se a gerar mais beefs desnecessários e a tornar o graff mais inacessível em termos de comunidade. Daqui a pouco, já ninguém se dá com ninguém e isso irrita-me.
Qual é o teu melhor trabalho?
Funky Na minha opinião, o "the alchemist".
Ismo Aquele que ainda vou fazer.
Jaym Definitivamente, a peça que mandei em honra de uns amigos meus que faleceram, tivemos um lado do túnel inteiro para os homenagear e o outro para mandarmos peças com as nossas tags.
Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?
Funky Não comprem boxers brancos, mantenham uma excelente higiene bucal e não assaltem tabacarias.
Ismo Pra já, nada de relevante.
Jaym Só quero partilhar que em Évora se anda a fazer Jams bacanos que podem ver no YouTube "Grosso Modo".

In the beginning it was Funk and his works were scattered throughout the city of Évora. After discovering his first piece (with Quirino), in the city center, I went in search of the rest (using his Instagram account and the help of my mother-in-law, in identifying the places).
Some time later, Frame01 and Skran01 were at Alentexas, to participate in two jams with some members of the Drunk Masters Crew (DMC). It was another opportunity to review Funky's works, discover a few more spots and get to (re) discover the work of Loz, Ismo or Kunga. More recently, in a conversation with Jaym, another member of the DMC, I received an invitation to accompany the group in one of their painting sessions. After analyzing the confinement periods, there I got an opening to go and watch one of the group's jams on the wall of the Colégio dos Leões - Universidade de Évora, one of its favorite places and where Funky (with the support of the crew) usually organizes GROSSO MODO.
After a well spent afternoon and a few rounds of beers, I decided to invite them to a joint interview. Here are the answers.
What is the meaning of your tag? Funky Funk is the surprise effect. Ismo My Tag itself, in Portuguese and English grammar, is considered a suffix. Which, for me, is just a name open to various themes and forms of interpretation. Jaym My tag comes from the pronunciation of the letter J in English and M, despite having abbreviated the pronunciation of M. When did your interest in graffiti start and what were your influences at the time? Funky It started around 2011, but I only started painting, even seriously, in 2014/15. Ismo My interest in graffiti also arose in the 9th grade. It's funny, because stora had suggested that we paint our A3 covers according to our taste and, during that moment, I was already discovering the musical culture of Hip Hop itself better and I just resembled A plus B wanted to be different and didn't know anyone to do graffiti. So, I launched myself forward. Jaym My interest started at a very young age (2005-2006). When I regularly went to Lisbon and Portimão, I saw countless graffiti of people who are now living legends and I think that it was always with me, until I started and met some of them. What was the graffiti scene like when you started? Funky In Alentejo, it was stagnant. We revived the flame and created our own sub culture of Alentejo graffiti. Ismo The graffiti scene when I started, I believe it was much more physical than what it is now, less digitized. But, in a way, if it weren't for the environment where I lived, I never would have discovered graffiti as it is. So, simply, no matter how digitized or less, graffiti is graffiti. Although a lot of people don't have to leave the couch to see it, you have to get off the couch anyway to do it and hence the value, legal or illegal, is not on an ipad or a pc that you make graffiti. Jaym Txi, when I started, they only painted Iner and Gera here. Nobody really knew each other, it was all very underground.
What are your crews? Funky DMC. Ismo My crew is DMC. In other words, Drunk Master Crew. Jaym Drunk Masters Crew (DMC) and Without Truce (WT). What are your favorite spots / cities? Funky Wall of fame of lions in Évora, where I learned and had more fun in my whole life of painting. (If not, I also loved all the trips and spraycations I did, from Kosovo, Denmark, Cambodia and many more). Ismo I have no favorite spot. It would be brutal to paint by the beach or any cliché of these, but each spot is a spot, each has its essence, wherever and in which city. Jaym Anything that is in the public eye, no matter where it is. I definitely love Évora. Wall of fame, Street bombing or Train bombing? Funky Wall of fame, abandoned spots and liters. Ismo Wall of fame, probably. As an Assistant Health Technician, trains sucks shouldn't take me to the police station. If not, I will go to unemployment and community service. Jaym I do a little of everything, but I prefer Street and Train Bombing. How is your creative process and where do you get your inspiration from? Funky For a long time, it was Cartoon maximum. Nowadays, I intend to incorporate more still life, porcelain and more elaborate elements. My desire is always to try to be fresh. Ismo Well, my creative process is quite simple, when I leave work I do all that process that anyone does: I prepare anything to drink, roll a cigarette and simply draw, sometimes with a purpose or a formulated idea and others in "freestyle". Jaym Honestly, I never really thought about it. I just think of something I would like to see and try to do it from my mind, hah. My biggest inspirations are the old guard writers who are constantly evolving, like Rime, Revok, Mosaik, hure and many more. What is your top 3 of Portuguese writers? Funky Paor, Jaym, Nyfe, Loz. Ismo Mosaik, ekoprimeiro, chure. Jaym Mosaik, chure, frame, skran, virus, secso, synop, sudae ... It's hard to choose 3. And foreign writers? Funky Sepe, Ernestillm, Enora / Koye, Saturn, Kilz, Timeek, Roids and so many others ... Ismo Uroki, omsk, stan / nats. Jaym Rime, revok, saber, Jaber, GK, twist, Giant, seen, blade, Smith, Kid, Pk .... I would be here all day sending names of brutal people.
Who do you like to paint with?
Funky Everyone who understands funk.
Ismo With guys who pull for you, friends. If there is someone calling me, I just put the headphones on. xD
Jaym Anyone who is a good person. But most of the time, with my Crew.
What plays in your playlist when you paint?
Funky Everything that makes your pelvis shake.

How do you describe the current landscape of graffiti in Portugal?

Ismo Each one on his own land, unfortunately. I would like to be able to travel more by the tuga, to meet the staff both older and newer. I think this is the only side that could be better for me, because, for the rest, I see that a large part is evolving very quickly. Which is great.
Jaym I think that Graffiti in Portugal is growing at an enormous level. However, more unnecessary beefs are being generated and graffiti is becoming more inaccessible in terms of community. In a little while, nobody gets along with anyone and that irritates me.
What is your best job? Funky In my opinion, "the alchemist". Ismo The one I'm still going to do. Jaym Definitely, the piece I sent in honor of some friends of mine who passed away, we had one side of the entire tunnel to honor them and the other side to send pieces with our tags. Do you have a story you want to share? Funky Do not buy white boxers, maintain excellent oral hygiene and do not assault tobacco shops. Ismo For now, nothing relevant. Jaym I just want to share that in Évora people are doing cool Jams that can be seen on YouTube "Grosso Modo". Props? Funky All.
