Ivo Santos nasceu em Lisboa em 1985.
Impulsionado pela sua mãe, interessou-se pelo desenho desde muito novo.
Na década de 90, descobriu o amor pela Cultura Hip Hop, abraçando o Graffiti como vertente a seguir.
No início do novo milénio, arriscou pela primeira vez a pintura a spray, usando o pseudónimo SMILE.
A sua projecção nacional aconteceu em 2004, quando venceu categoricamente o Concurso de Graffiti de Oeiras, o mais importante certame àquela data.
A internacionalização da sua arte tem vindo a decorrer, com convites para participar em eventos no Reino Unido, Alemanha, França, Espanha, Suíça, Holanda e Brasil.
Criou a Primeira Arte Atelier&Gallery.
É o Presidente da ACUParte Associação Cultural.
Conhecido pelas suas pinturas foto-realistas, o artista tem obras espalhadas de Norte a Sul de Portugal.
A presença de SMILE também é forte na Margem Sul, zona onde fotografo com maior regularidade.
Depois de algumas conversas no Instagram e de me ter cruzado com o artista no Seixal, em Cascais ou em Azeitão, acabou por ser RAPS o grande responsável pela promoção da entrevista que agora vos trago.

Qual o significado do teu tag?
Bem, quando o comecei a usar não tinha um significado, apenas gostava das letras que o formavam. Hoje em dia tem um significado grande pois quando termino uma peça fico sempre a sorrir. É sinal de missão cumprida e de que gostei do desafio.
E, acima de tudo, temos de sorrir para a vida.
Tens formação em arte?
Tive no secundário, mas não terminei. Considero-me um autodidata.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti / street art e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Começou em finais de 99 e as minhas influências foram EXAS, OBEY, SLAP, CAB, CHEF , WIZE, MOSAIK e YOUTH.
Como era a cena no graffiti / street art quando começaste?
Era pura, genuína e fazia-se porque se gostava, sem modas.
O facto de não haver internet fazia com que a tua peça tivesse que ficar bem pintada, porque as pessoas iam lá ver ao vivo. Hoje em dia pinta-se para a foto, se deres um outline torto na foto não se nota e siga porque estás ali a fazer scroll.
Quais são as tuas crews?
Os 1A (One Art) e os CN (Color Nomads).
Quais são os teus spots / cidades preferidos?
Uma parede que leve com o sol de manhã e à tarde esteja à sombra. 😂
Wall of fame, Street bombing ou Train bombing?
Wall of fame, a idade já pesa para correrias.
Preferes pintar sozinho ou em grupo?
Em grupo, sempre. Mas a vida leva-nos para outros caminhos e pinto 99% do tempo sozinho.
Como é o teu processo criativo e onde vais buscar as tuas inspirações?
Passa por analisar a zona envolvente da parede, histórias locais e, sem dúvida, os meus filhos. É onde vou buscar as minhas inspirações.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Sempre com projeto.
Qual é a tua lata preferida?
Gold, mas hardcore consegue ganhar às vezes, apesar da paleta de cores ser reduzida.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Rap Tuga e umas kizombas para estar tranquilo.
Com quem gostas de pintar?
Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti / street art em Portugal?
Bem, o graff acho que estagnou um pouco, já não vejo tanto street bombing como nos anos 2004/05, que foram épocas muito fortes.
Já no street art o panorama está bem diferente, com muitos mais artistas a aparecerem e mais peças. Mas não significa mais qualidade, atenção.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers portugueses?
Prefiro não mencionar nomes.
E de writers estrangeiros?
Qual é o teu melhor trabalho?
É sempre o último. Ou, pelo menos, tento que seja.
Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Gostava de ter mais tempo para a parte do estúdio, explorar outras coisas. Não gosto muito de fazer planos pois, hoje em dia, não podemos dar nada como garantido.
Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?
História, não. Apenas quero deixar uma pequena mensagem: não se deixem influenciar, foquem-se no que gostam e, acima de tudo, acreditem em vocês mesmos.

Ivo Santos was born in Lisbon in 1985.
Driven by his mother, he became interested in drawing from an early age.
In the 90's, he discovered his love for Hip Hop Culture, embracing Graffiti as a way forward.
At the beginning of the new millennium, for the first time, he took the risk of spray painting, using the pseudonym SMILE.
Its national projection took place in 2004, when it categorically won the Oeiras Graffiti Contest, the most important event on that date.
The internationalization of his art has been ongoing, with invitations to participate in events in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Holland and Brazil.
Created the First Arte Atelier&Gallery.
He is the President of ACUarte Associação Cultural.
Known for his photo-realistic paintings, the artist has works spread from North to South of Portugal.
The artist's presence is also strong in the South Bank, an area where I photograph more regularly.
After some conversations on Instagram and having met the artist in Seixal, Cascais or Azeitão, it turned out to be RAPS who was largely responsible for promoting the interview I now bring to you.

What is the meaning of your tag? Well, when I started using it it didn't have a meaning, I just liked the letters that formed it. Nowadays it has great meaning because, when I finish a piece, I am always smiling. It's a sign of mission accomplished and that I enjoyed the challenge. And, above all, we have to smile for life. Do you have an art background? I had it in high school, but I didn't finish. I consider myself a self-taught person. When did you start your interest in graffiti / street art and what were your influences at the time? It started in late 99 and my influences were EXAS, OBEY, SLAP, CAB, CHEF , WIZE, MOSAIK and YOUTH. What was the graffiti / street art scene like when you started? It was pure, genuine and made because you liked it, without fashions. The fact that there is no internet meant that your piece had to be well painted, because people would go there to see it live. Nowadays you paint for the photo, if you give a crooked outline in the photo you won't notice it and go ahead because you're there scrolling. What are your crews? The 1A (One Art) and the CN (Color Nomads). What are your favorite spots / cities? A wall that takes in the sun in the morning and in the afternoon is in the shade. 😂
Wall of fame, Street bombing or Train bombing?
Wall of fame, age is already heavy for running.
How is your creative process and where do you get your inspirations?
It involves analyzing the area surrounding the wall, local stories and, without a doubt, my children. That's where I get my inspirations.
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?
Always with project.
What is your favorite can?
Gold, but hardcore manages to win at times, although the color palette is reduced.
What is your top 3 Portuguese writers?
I prefer not to mention names.
And foreign writers?
Do you prefer to paint alone or in a group? In a group, always. But life takes us to other paths and I paint 99% of the time alone. Who do you like to paint with? AYER, SEN and my Crew CN. What plays on your playlist when you paint? Rap Tuga and some kizombas to be calm. How do you describe the current panorama of graffiti / street art in Portugal? Well, the graff I think has stagnated a little, I don't see as much street bombing as in the years 2004/05, which were very strong times. In street art, the panorama is quite different, with many more artists appearing and more pieces. But it doesn't mean more quality, attention. What is your best work? It's always the last. Or at least I try to be. What are your future plans / projects? I wish I had more time for the studio part, exploring other things. I don't really like making plans as we can't take anything for granted these days. Do you have a story you want to share? History, no. I just want to leave a little message: don't be influenced, focus on what you like and, above all, believe in yourself. Props?
