Esta foi uma daquelas entrevistas "sem espinhas"...
Sou um apreciador das obras de Liric e do seu estilo clean, que mistura lettering e characters.
Há cerca de um mês atrás, na nossa primeira conversa no Instagram, resolvi convidá-lo para uma entrevista. Feliz por poder dar o seu testemunho acerca deste modo de vida que o preenche há 20 anos, o writer foi rápido a aceitar o convite e a dar as suas respostas.
E como bónus, ainda tive direito à execução de uma peça alusiva à minha página.

Qual o significado do teu tag?
Na mesma altura em que comecei a interessar-me pelo graffiti e que começo a pintar, vejo o filme "Jason's Lyric". O filme marcou-me e Lyric pareceu-me um bom tag.
Acabou por assentar bem porque o poema lírico é uma forma sucinta de expressar os sentimentos e emoções do poeta. E acho que o graff também é muito isso, através do teu tag expressares as emoções daquele momento.
Tens formação em arte?
Não tenho nenhuma formação em arte. Sou interessado, faço as minhas pesquisas e tudo aquilo que (acho) que sei é autodidata. E para mim, essa também é a magia do graffiti.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Em 97/98 estava na escola e num dos intervalos fui ao sítio onde o pessoal todo se reunia. Chego às arcadas do pátio e estava lá um pessoal a pintar as paredes.
Era uma cena legal e organizada mas eu não sabia que aquilo ia acontecer e quando vejo aqueles manos a esticar grandes lines na parede, fez-se o click! Lembro-me de ter pensado: "tenho que fazer parte disto!".
Já via algum graffiti na minha zona mas comecei a prestar especial atenção aos graffs que havia na 24 de Julho, Linha C, etc...
As referências do que era graffiti "a sério" passaram a ser PRM, NCW, Exas, Obey, Eith, Bzar, etc...
Como era a cena no graffiti quando começaste?
Do meu ponto de vista, havia respeito e admiração pelos kings.
Os estilos desenvolviam-se com a inspiração do que se via em revistas, com as peças que iam aparecendo na cidade (e também com os graffs mais antigos) e a fazer projetos com a crew.
Quais são as tuas crews?
A minha primeira crew foi MK "mufflers crew", com o Silas e o Mean. Mais tarde, com a entrada de mais pessoal, criou-se a crew AGW, que se mantém até hoje.
Quais são os teus spots / cidades preferidos?
Spots abandonados, onde quer que sejam. Costuma dizer-se que na natureza nada se perde e tudo se transforma. Acho que é o que acontece com esses sítios. Estão dados como mortos mas para os writers a história não acaba ali e acabam por lhes dar uma nova identidade.
Dois exemplos de writers que aproveitam a envolvência e levam aquilo para outra dimensão são o Odeith e o Vile!
Como é o teu processo criativo e onde vais buscar as tuas inspirações?
A música dá-me muita inspiração! Seja por uma letra que cria uma determinada imagem na minha cabeça ou seja pelo flow que transmite ao desenho.
Às vezes, também acontece o próprio sketch começar a ir numa direção em que, a meio, me dá uma nova ideia e surge algo diferente.
O meu processo criativo é desenhar o meu tag de forma compulsiva. Ando sempre com um bloco atrás e durante o meu dia-a-dia, quando tenho um bocado livre, mando uns projetos e vão aparecendo uns que assinalo para pintar mais tarde.
Wall of fame, Street bombing ou Train bombing?
"Abandoned bombing"? Atualmente, não sei onde me encaixo. No entanto, tenho o maior respeito por qualquer uma dessas vertentes. À sua maneira, cada uma tem os seus desafios!
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Tenho sempre comigo vários sketches, só para ter uma noção do que vai ser, mas deixo espaço para o improviso. Às vezes, a parede também tem algo a dizer e, se adaptar o sketch à parede (dando atenção a uma falha, um ferro, etc...), até resulta em algo melhor.
Preferes pintar sozinho ou em grupo?
Sempre pintei com o meu mano Silas, quando pinto acompanhado. Quando se tem uma crew e uma amizade de tão longa data, a vibe é excelente. Mas pintar sozinho é algo que não abdico. Costumo dizer que o dinheiro que gasto em latas não gasto em terapia! =) Gosto (e preciso) da evasão de estar 2, 3 ou 4 horas afastado de tudo, na minha, a fazer aquilo que gosto.
Qual é a tua lata preferida?
Atualmente, a NBQ é uma lata que tenho sempre.
Mas o melhor equilíbrio que vejo numa lata é na Montana Black. Qualidade da tinta, pressão, cores, preço... tudo "on point"!
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
A minha playlist é muito diversificada mas, quando vou ouvir som enquanto pinto, acabo quase sempre por ouvir o mesmo... Regula!
Como defines o teu estilo?
Eu acho que a linha que separa ter um estilo muito próprio e fazer muitas vezes a mesma coisa é muito ténue... Faço o meu lettering como me parece bem na altura, sem pensar muito no estilo que é.
Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti em Portugal?
Daquilo que vejo, acho que é uma boa fase. Há espaço para tudo e para todos. Para quem se manda a fachadas e grandes paredes legais há cada vez mais municípios a apostar nisso e nos comboios a "máquina" continua a mexer e o pessoal está ativo em geral.
Há material excelente e o acesso a ele é fácil.
E, olhando para trás, o graffiti já foi muito mais "demonizado" do que é hoje.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers portugueses?
O nosso país tem writers muito bons e não consigo apontar só três, porque aprecio umas cenas de uns, outras de outros e é muita gente!
Um writer que conheci recentemente e que destaco é o Ayer. Além de ter uma técnica irrepreensível, é um "boa onda" de primeira!
E de writers estrangeiros?
Do estrangeiro, o Salmos, Cuik e Swet. No caso dos dois primeiros gosto da mistura do lettering com personagens ou elementos ilustrativos de uma forma "simples". Há ali uma espécie de "fazer mais com menos" que curto muito!
Qual é o teu melhor trabalho?
Não sei se esta resposta costuma ser "chapa 5" mas... é o que ainda não está feito! Sempre que pinto penso no que vou fazer a seguir e o que quero melhorar.
Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Continuar a conciliar o graffiti com a minha vida familiar e profissional e encaixá-lo no meu dia-a-dia. Mais a longo prazo, continuar a pintar até ser possível.
É curioso, os mesmos tipos que me inspiraram no início continuam a fazê-lo agora por outros motivos... É que alguns já levam mais de trinta anos disto e continuam no ativo! Acho que é um marco respeitável e gostava de lá chegar.
Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?
Lol, lembro-me de uma que aconteceu há dias...
Não sei se isto acontece a mais alguém, mas eu, quando começo a pintar, tenho tudo organizado e arrumado mas passado um bocado já é latas por todo o lado e tudo espalhado. Como pinto em sítios abandonados, há sempre alguma coisa afiada por perto, um prego ou um vidro, enfim... Da última vez que pintei, ao afastar-me da parede para olhar para o graff, tropecei numa lata que tinha um sacana dum prego por baixo e, claro, rebentou a lata... O resto já sabem, granda "geiser" de tinta por todo o lado e tive que mandar a lata tipo granada, para ver se não tomava um banho de Montana.
Até não correu mal e deu para safar...

Ao meu grande amigo e mano de crew, Silas! Nem sempre estivemos no ativo mas sei que ele, tal como eu, respira e vive o graffiti! Além disso, está constantemente a desafiar-me para sair da minha zona de conforto e a dar aquela força.
"Last but not least", props à minha mulher. Apesar de desenhar como eu desenhava no pré-escolar, tem um excelente sentido estético e dá-me umas dicas de cores que resultam melhor que outras.

This was one of those "spineless" interviews... I love Liric's works and his clean style that mixes lettering and characters. About a month ago, in our first conversation on Instagram, I decided to invite him for an interview. Happy to be able to give his testimony about this way of life that has filled him for 20 years, the writer was quick to accept the invitation and give his answers. And as a bonus, I was also entitled to the execution of a piece alluding to my page. A big thank you to Liric.
What is the meaning of your tag? Just as I started to get interested in graffiti and started painting, I saw the movie "Jason's Lyric". The movie marked me and Lyric struck me as a good tag. It turned out to be a good fit because the lyrical poem is a succinct way of expressing the poet's feelings and emotions. And I think graff is also a lot of that, through your tag you express the emotions of that moment. Do you have an art background? I have no training in art. I'm interested, I do my research and everything (I think) I know is self-taught. And for me, this is also the magic of graffiti.
When did you start your interest in graffiti and what were your influences at the time? In 97/98 I was at school and during one of the breaks I went to the place where everyone gathered. I arrive at the arcades in the courtyard and there are people painting the walls.
It was a nice and organized scene but I didn't know it was going to happen and when I see those bros stretching big lines on the wall, it clicked! I remember thinking: "I have to be a part of this!".
I already saw some graffiti in my area but I started to pay special attention to the graffs that were on 24 de Julho, Line C, etc...
The references of what was "real" graffiti became PRM, NCW, Exas, Obey, Eith, Bzar, etc... What was the graffiti scene like when you started? From my point of view, there was respect and admiration for the kings. The styles were developed with the inspiration of what was seen in magazines, with the pieces that were appearing in the city (and also with the older graffs) and with making projects with the crew.
What are your crews?
My first crew was MK "mufflers crew", with Silas and Mean. Later, with the entry of more staff, the AGW crew was created, which remains until today.
What are your favorite spots / cities?
Abandoned spots, wherever they are. It is often said that in nature nothing is lost and everything is transformed. I think that's what happens with these sites. They are presumed dead but for the writers the story doesn't end there and they end up giving them a new identity.
Two examples of writers that take advantage of the surroundings and take it to another dimension are Odeith and Vile!
How is your creative process and where do you get your inspirations?
Music gives me a lot of inspiration! Either by a letter that creates a certain image in my head or by the flow that it transmits to the drawing.
Sometimes, it also happens that the sketch itself starts to go in a direction where, halfway through, it gives me a new idea and something different emerges.
My creative process is to compulsively design my tag. I always have a pad behind and during my day-to-day life, when I have a free time, I send some projects and some appear that I mark to paint later.
Wall of fame, Street bombing or Train bombing?
"Abandoned bombing"? Currently, I don't know where I fit in. However, I have the greatest respect for any of these strands. In its own way, each one has its challenges!
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle? I always have several sketches with me, just to get a sense of what it's going to be, but I leave room for improvisation. Sometimes the wall also has something to say, and adapting the sketch to the wall (paying attention to a flaw, an iron, etc...) even results in something better. Do you prefer to paint alone or in a group? I always painted with my brother Silas, when I paint with others. When you have such a long-standing crew and friendship, the vibe is great. But painting alone is something I don't give up. I often say that the money I spend on cans I don't spend on therapy! =) I like (and need) the evasion of being 2, 3 or 4 hours away from everything, with my own, doing what I like.
What is your favorite can? Currently, NBC is a can I always have. But the best balance I see in a can is Montana Black. Ink quality, pressure, colors, price... all "on point"! What plays on your playlist when you paint? My playlist is very diverse, but when I listen to the sound while I paint, I almost always end up hearing the same... Regula! How do you define your style? I think the line between having a very unique style and doing the same thing many times is very thin... I do my lettering as it seems to me at the time, without thinking too much about the style it is. How would you describe the current panorama of graffiti in Portugal? From what I see, I think it's a good phase. There is space for everything and everyone. For those who are committed to facades and large legal walls, more and more municipalities are betting on this, and in the trains the "machine" continues to move and the staff is generally active. There is excellent material and access to it is easy. And, looking back, graffiti was once much more "demonized" than it is today. What is your top 3 Portuguese writers? Our country has very good writers and I can't point to just three, because I enjoy some scenes from some, others from others and there are a lot of people! A writer I met recently and that I highlight is Ayer. In addition to having an impeccable technique, he's a "good wave" of first class!
And foreign writers? From abroad, Salmos, Cuik and Swet. In the case of the first two I like because they mix the lettering with characters or illustrative elements in a "simple" way. There is a kind of "doing more with less" that I enjoy a lot!
What is your best work?
I don't know if this answer is usually the same but... that's what hasn't been done yet! Every time I paint I think about what I'm going to do next and what I want to improve.
What are your future plans / projects?
To continue to reconcile graffiti with my family and professional life and fit it into my day-to-day. In the longer term, continue to paint until possible.
It's curious, the same guys who inspired me in the beginning continue to do it now for another reasons... It's just that some have been doing this for more than thirty years and are still active! I think it's a respectable milestone and I'd like to get there.
Do you have a story you want to share?
Lol, I remember one that happened days ago...
I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but when I start to paint, I have everything organized and tidy but after a while there are cans everywhere and everything spread out. As I paint in abandoned places, there's always something sharp around, a nail or glass, anyway... The last time I painted, when I walked away from the wall to look at the graff, I tripped over a can that had a bastard of a nail underneath and, of course, the can burst... The rest you know, there are paint geisers all over the place and I had to send the can like a grenade, to see if I wasn't taking a Montana shower.
It didn't even go wrong and I could get away with it...

To my great friend and crew bro, Silas! We weren't always active but I know that he, like me, breathes and lives graffiti! Plus, he's constantly challenging me to get out of my comfort zone and give me that strength.
