Já seguia o trabalho de Gnasher quando as suas obras começaram a circular nas redes sociais para ilustrar a pandemia que assolou o planeta em 2019.
Natural de Essex, Reino Unido, foi em 1987 que o artista aderiu ao movimento do graffiti (que se encontrava em clara expansão, na altura) e enveredou pela execução das personagens que acompanhavam as letras dos companheiros de pintura.
Depois de alguns anos ligado ao Djing e ao design gráfico, foi em 2009 que regressou às latas e ficou "agarrado" ao spray.
Rendido aos trabalhos comissionados que lhe limitam a liberdade criativa (a sua preferência vai para os felinos), o artista maravilha-nos com a pintura de cantores, atores, desportistas ou personagens de filmes e videojogos no seu estilo hiper-realista.

Qual é o significado do teu tag?
Gnasher… Como o meu nome é David Nash, o meu apelido na escola era nashy … Quando era criança, havia uma banda desenhada chamada The Beano que tinha um cachorro chamado Gnasher. Eu usei-o como o meu nome de DJ nos anos 90. Quando comecei a pintar novamente em 2009, não sabia o que assinar, então assinei o meu nome de DJ.
Tens formação em arte?
Estudei arte e design na faculdade, mas onde aprendes a pintar com uma lata é na rua.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo(a) graffiti / street art e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Comecei em 87. Obviamente, como toda a gente, a minha primeira influência foi o livro de arte Subway… mas localmente foram os artistas KaNz e Fuge.
Como era a cena do(a) grafitti / street art quando começaste?
Eu sou de uma pequena cidade em Essex… surpreendentemente, tinha uma grande cena, nomeadamente o KaNz e o Fuge… Não estávamos muito longe de Londres e havia alguns grandes artistas que costumávamos seguir… a minha primeira influência foi, provavelmente, o Mode2.
O que preferes? Djing, design gráfico ou graffiti / street art?
Eu costumava ser um DJ, eu costumava fazer design gráfico, eu faço street art ou graffiti para viver… não posso dizer que eu gosto realmente disso também, lol.
Em quantos países já pintaste? Alguma passagem por Portugal?
Já tive muitas ofertas para pintar no estrangeiro… mas, infelizmente, não tenho ofertas de pagamento, apenas voos gratuitos… não posso justificar com a família… pintei na Alemanha e Reino Unido… e já estive no Algarve, excelente marisco.
Como é o teu processo criativo e quais são as inspirações para as tuas obras?
A internet e os filmes.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Nunca freestyle … Eu tenho o desenho todo quadriculado de antemão.
Quais são os teus spots / cidades favoritos(as) para pintar?
Londres é a melhor, até agora, o público é o melhor.
Preferes pintar sozinho ou em grupo?
Definitivamente, com um grupo. Eu odeio pintar, então conversar com as pessoas faz com que seja interessante pelo menos ... brincadeiras sofisticadas são as melhores.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Eu nem escuto música quando pinto, mas quando vou correr escuto as minhas mixtapes antigas. Triste, hein?
Qual é a tua lata favorita?
Não tenho uma lata favorita ... todas as marcas têm certas cores que nenhuma outra tem.
Qual é o teu top 3 de artistas / writers do Reino Unido?
E de artistas / writers estrangeiros?
Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti e da street art no Reino Unido?
Na realidade, eu não sei muito sobre a cena, uma vez que pinto para viver. Estou um pouco fora do circuito.
Qual é o teu melhor trabalho?
Eu odeio literalmente tudo que pinto. Todas as vezes acho que a próxima peça será a melhor, mas nunca é.
Qual foi o trabalho que te deu mais luta?
Qualquer coisa em persianas, superfície terrível para trabalhar. Isso e contentores.
Quais são os teus planos/projetos futuros?
Eu tenho um milhão e um projetos porreiros, mas assim que eu digo a alguém eles nunca acontecem... então, vou ficar quieto por agora.
Tens alguma história que queiras partilhar?
Na altura em que eu pintava ... Estávamos a pintar e o meu amigo chamou-me, eu dobrei a esquina e ele borrifou-me com tinta verde ... No comboio para casa, ele apresentou-me como o Hulk a toda a gente que encontrámos.

I was already following the work of Gnasher when his works began to circulate on social media to illustrate the pandemic that devastated the planet in 2019.
Born in Essex, United Kingdom, it was in 1987 that the artist joined the graffiti movement (which was clearly expanding at the time) and embarked on the execution of characters that accompanied the letters of his fellow painters.
After a few years connected to Djing and graphic design, it was in 2009 that he returned to cans and became "cling" to the spray.
Surrendered to commissioned works that limit his creative freedom (his preference is for felines), the artist marvels at painting singers, actors, sportsmen or movie and video game characters in his hyper-realistic style.

What is the meaning of your tag?
Gnasher … As my name is David Nash, my nickname was nashy at school … There was a comic as a kid called The Beano, there was a dog called Gnasher. I used that as my DJ name back in the 90s. When I started painting again in 2009 I didn’t know what to sign it so I signed it my DJ name.
Are you trained in art?
I studied art and design at college, but you learn to paint with a can on the streets.
When did it start your interest in graffiti / street art and what were your influences at the time?
I started in 87. Obviously like everyone my first influence was Subway art book … but locally it was artists KaNz and Fuge.
What was the graffiti / street art scene like when you started?
I’m from a small town in Essex … surprisingly it had a big scene, namely KaNz and Fuge … We wasn’t too far from London and few big artists used to follow … my first influence was prob Mode2.
What do you prefer? Djing, graphic design or graffiti / street art?
I used to be a DJ, I used to do graphic design, I do street art or graffiti as a living … can’t say I really enjoy that either, lol.
In how many countries have you painted? Any passage through Portugal?
I’ve had many offers on painting abroad … but alas no offer on payment, but free flights … I can’t justify with the family … I’ve painted Germany plus UK … I went to algarve tho, great sea food.
How is your creative process and where do you get your inspirations?
The internet and films.
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?
Never freestyle … I have my design all gridded out before hand.
What are your favorite spots / cities to paint?
London is always the best so far, the public are the best.
Do you prefer to paint alone or in a group?
Defo as a group. I hate painting, so chatting to people makes it at least interesting … high end banter is best.
What plays on your playlist when you paint?
I don’t even listen to music when I paint, but when I go jogging I listen to my old mixes. Sad, eh?
What is your favorite can?
I don’t have a favourite can ... all brands have a certain colours that none other has.

How would you describe the current panorama of graffiti / street art in the UK?
Hey man, I don’t really know too much about the scene anymore as I paint for a living. I’m a bit out the loop.
What is your best work?
I literally hate everything I paint, every time the next piece will be the best, but never is.
What was the job that gave you the most struggle?
Anything on shutters, terrible surface to work on. That and containers.
What are your future plans/projects?
I have a million and one cool projects, and as soon as I tell anyone they never happen … so I keep quiet now.
Do you have a story you would like to share?
When I was painting back in the day … We were painting and my friend called me, I run round a corner and he sprayed green paint over me … On the train home we bumped into everyone and he introduced me as the Hulk.
