Já tinha fotografado algumas peças de MAGUS nos concelhos de Vila Franca de Xira e Loures, quando ouvi dizer que ia organizar uma jam na Póvoa de Santa Iria.
Como me movo mais pela Margem Sul, aproveitei a recolha fotográfica da "sua" TOXIC SWAMP JAM para ficar a conhecer o trabalho de alguns dos writers locais e para apreciar as peças de outros que já seguia.
Há uns fins de semana atrás, o writer organizou mais uma jam na Póvoa de Santa Iria e convidou-me para aparecer por lá. Depois de dois dias bem passados na companhia de um conjunto de participantes muito talentosos e de umas quantas mensagens trocadas no Instagram, convidei MAGUS para esta entrevista.

Qual é o significado do teu tag?
Não tem grande significado. Já tive outros 2 tags, mas nunca tive actividade nem interesse em evoluir nessa altura. Mais tarde, em 2006, escolhi as letras com que mais me identifiquei e criei um tag com personalidade.
Tens formação em arte?
Experimentei várias aulas, desde pintura a escultura e design. Mas não tenho formação.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
O meu interesse surgiu na zona de V.F.X / LOURES, no fim dos 90's / começo dos 00's. Chapas e Wall of Fames com wildstyles, 3D e bonecos como nunca tinha visto (e isso foi desaparecendo com o tempo). O meu primeiro graff (ASH) foi numas hortas em 98. Deixei passar uns anos, nunca me mantive no activo e tive outros trabalhos. Recentemente, voltei ao graff, com intenção de continuar.
Como era a cena no graffiti quando começaste?
Tinha mais conteúdo e originalidade. Uma boa escola!
Quais são as tuas crews?
Dispenso crew, mas é raro pintar sozinho.
Como classificas o teu estilo?
WILDSTYLE
Street bombing, train bombing ou wall of fame?
Eu vou a todas.
Tens organizado umas jams na tua zona. Há ideias para um evento de grande escala?
Ainda não estão preparados para o que aí vem. 😈
O que é para ti um bom dia de pinturas?
Bom tempo, bom spot, boa companhia.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Ultimamente, tenho feito tudo a freestyle, por opção.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Principalmente hip-hop 90s, mas também gosto de techno.
Tens alguma história engraçada para contar?
Tenho algumas, mas prefiro deixar para outra altura. 😈
Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti em Portugal? O que achas que pode melhorar?
Muito fraco! Não por falta de qualidade mas por falta de interesse e oportunidades. Hoje, quem começa não tem noção (muito menos respeito) para com a cultura. Falta de informação! Quem só procura fama não dura muito tempo. Não basta só pintar!
Que conselhos dás à nova geração de writers?
Não fiquem só a partilhar nome, existe muito mais no graffiti do que pintar. Partilhem experiências.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers portugueses?
E de writers estrangeiros?
Em tantos anos ligado ao graffiti, já viste muitos writers e crews ficarem pelo caminho. O que te mantém forte na tua ligação ao movimento?
Infelizmente, já vi uns quantos. Mas fico feliz por saber que o movimento nunca morreu.
Qual é aquela que consideras a tua melhor obra, aquela que te deu mais luta e aquela que ainda te falta fazer?

Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Muitas ideias. Se conseguir metade já fico contente. O importante é não desistir, passe o tempo que passar.

I had already photographed some pieces by MAGUS in the municipalities of Vila Franca de Xira and Loures, when I heard that he was going to organize a jam in Póvoa de Santa Iria. As I move more around South Bank, I took advantage of the photographic collection of "his" TOXIC SWAMP JAM to get to know the work of some of the local writers and to appreciate the pieces of others I was already following. A few weekends ago, the writer organized another jam in Póvoa de Santa Iria and invited me to come there. After two days well spent in the company of a group of very talented participants and a few messages exchanged on Instagram, I invited Magus to this interview. My thanks to my guest for his contribution and I look forward to the next events.
What is the meaning of your tag?
It doesn't have much meaning. I already had 2 other tags, but I never had activity or interest in evolving at that time. Later, in 2006, I chose the lyrics that I most identified with and created a tag with personality.
Do you have art training?
I tried several classes, from painting to sculpture and design. But I have no training.
When did your interest in graffiti begin and what were your influences at the time?
My interest arose in the area of V.F.X / LOURES, in the late 90's / early 00's. Plates and Wall of Fames with wildstyles, 3D and dolls like I've never seen (and that was disappearing with time). My first graff (ASH) was in a vegetable garden in 1998. I let a few years go by, I never kept active and I had other jobs. I recently returned to graff, intending to continue.
What was the graffiti scene like when you started?
It had more content and originality. A good school!
What are your crews? I don't need a crew, but it's rare to paint alone. How do you define your style? WILDTYLE Street bombing, train bombing or wall of fame? I go to all. You've been organizing some jams in your area. Do you have ideas for a large-scale event? You are not yet ready for what is to come. 😈
What is a good day of paintings for you? Good weather, good spot, good company. Do you paint with sketch or freestyle? Lately, I've been doing everything freestyle, by choice. What plays on your playlist when you paint? Mostly 90s hip-hop, but I also like techno. Do you have a funny story to tell? I have some, but I prefer to leave it for another time. 😈
How do you describe the current situation of graffiti in Portugal? What do you think can improve?
Very weak! Not for lack of quality but for lack of interest and opportunities. Today, those who start have no idea (much less respect) for the culture. Lack of information! Who only seeks fame does not last long. It's not enough just to paint!
What advice do you give to the new generation of writers?
Don't just share your name, there is much more to graffiti than painting. Share experiences.
What is your top 3 of Portuguese writers?
And from foreign writers?
In so many years connected to graffiti, you've seen many writers and crews get in the way. What keeps you strong in your connection to the movement?
Unfortunately, I've seen quite a few. But I'm glad to know that the movement never died.
Which one do you consider your best work, the one that gave you the most struggle and the one that you still have to do?

What are your future plans/projects?
So many ideas. If I get half I'll be happy. The important thing is not to give up, spend the time that passes.
