O meu próximo entrevistado chega da vizinha Espanha e foi mais uma agradável descoberta no Instagram.
Miguel Ángel Medina, conhecido artisticamente como KAPONE, é um writer natural de Valladolid a residir atualmente em Vitoria-Gasteiz, onde os seus characters elaborados marcam presença nos mercados e muros dos diferentes bairros da cidade e são facilmente identificáveis pelos seus motivos geek e pelo seu humor.
O writer, que se define como um amante das bandas desenhadas underground americanas (e da cultura vintage daquele país), cita o cartoonista Peter Bagge como uma das suas grandes influências. Kapone não se esconde e não é difícil encontrá-lo a deixar a sua marca em plena luz do dia nas paredes dos diferentes bairros de Gasteiz. A par com esta vertente mais transgressiva, trabalha em conjunto com outro colega na execução de trabalhos comissionados (como murais e decoração) sob a assinatura FILL IN CULTURE.
Em primeiro lugar, fala-nos um pouco sobre ti.
Moro em Vitoria-Gasteiz, País Basco, tenho 40 anos, uma família com duas meninas e um menino. O mais velho, de 7 anos, já veio pintar graffiti comigo.
Sou uma pessoa muito crítica com o meu trabalho e com o dos outros, não quero que um writer viva de rendimentos ou do que era e gosto de ver uma evolução contínua em mim e nos outros, de preferência para melhor (com exceção daqueles que fizeram de seu trabalho um ícone e o usam como uma repetição com variações, adoro isso). Apesar de já tudo ter sido inventado, gosto de pensar que dou ao espetador coisas diferentes.
Qual é o significado do teu tag? E do termo "Take this" que utilizas nas tuas obras?
O meu tag é Kapone simplesmente porque, há mais de 20 anos, quando eu ainda não pintava paredes, os meus colegas e eu decidimos uma manhã começar a taggar na rua e encontrámo-nos, depois do almoço, com um nome já pensado. Foi uma coisa muito rápida, eu criei o kapone, por causa das letras que tinha e por causa da cena da velha escola de adicionar ONE no final. Com o tempo, eu poderia ter mudado mas, quando percebi, já todos me chamavam por esse nome.
Take this é o nome da minha crew.
Tens formação em arte?
Sim, desde pequeno que me levavam para uma academia de bairro, com mulheres, para aprender a pintar a óleo, naturezas-mortas, retratos e paisagens. Fiz um bacharelado artístico na Escola de Arte de Valladolid. Depois mudei-me para Madrid e fiz um curso superior em ilustração na Escuela de arte 10.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Tenho interesse por Graffiti há 27 ou 28 anos, quando visitava a cidade de Valladolid todas as semanas para ver se a velha escola da época tinha feito uma nova peça. Mas a verdade é que, naquela época, a minha influência baseava-se diretamente nas bandas desenhadas underground, principalmente americanas, como as de Peter Bage. E digamos que foi por isso que me concentrei em pintar bonecos (characters) ao invés de letras.
Quais são as tuas crews?
Desde o princípio: Comecei a assinar para uma crew de miúdos mais velhos do que eu chamada EXPANSIÓN CHINAL. Nessa época, ainda não pintava muros e tudo consistia em tomar a cidade com um ícone que era o rosto de um chinês de dentes grandes. Depois tive outros com writers diferentes, mas ainda estou especialmente empolgado por ter feito parte dos CHACHO ROCKERS, com um graffiti muito engraçado, com pessoas incríveis e simpáticas.
TAKE THIS é a atual, somos quatro membros: Bendito Rage e Frikuno, (de Vitória), Besdo Garsía (de Madrid) e eu. Sempre que se justifica, procuro representar adicionando ou integrando o nome da crew.
Por outro lado e no meu dia a dia, trabalho como muralista, fazendo decorações para particulares e empresas, além de oficinas participativas em escolas e associações com o nome de FILL IN CULTURE. (Nesta vertente, eu e o meu colega de trabalho tentamos sempre levar as encomendas para o nosso campo e oferecer ao cliente um trabalho mais pessoal e na nossa linha, deixando os murais padrão).
Como classificas o teu estilo?
O meu estilo já não é tão underground como era no início. Hoje em dia eu o definiria como Neo Pop. Como uma espécie de colagem e repetições que podem ser desconstruídas e remontadas à vontade.
Cinema, desenhos animados, publicidade... De onde tiras as influências para os teus trabalhos?
Gosto da cultura americana e da sua roupa suja, tudo velho, retro, vintage, esquecido, rançoso, humor negro, satírico, os Simpsons e afins, os detalhes que passam despercebidos, os rótulos dos produtos que não existem mais, as bandas desenhadas underground americanas e clássicos.
Em quantos países já pintaste? Alguma passagem por Portugal?
Eu gostaria de ter viajado mais mas, devido às circunstâncias da vida, tive que rejeitar alguns destinos bastante suculentos. Fora de Espanha, pintei na França, Bélgica e Alemanha.
A Portugal tenho ido apenas por lazer, mas adoraria poder ir a um evento e deixar lá alguns dos meus bonecos.
Quais são os teus locais preferidos para pintar?
No meio da cidade é onde mais pessoas podem vê-los. Uma pequena parede na qual possa encaixar um boneco é o que vale a pena.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Com um esboço. Posso improvisar traços e cores mas gosto de jogar pelo seguro, porque os meus bonecos não são feitos de primeira, não fico satisfeito com o primeiro resultado, posso sempre tirar algo mais. Existe um trabalho feito anteriormente.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
Depende do dia e do humor. A música é muito importante no meu trabalho e o boneco que eu desenho vai sair de uma forma ou de outra dependendo da música que eu tiver naquele momento.
Partindo do princípio de que odeio rádio de fórmula, que amo música e que me considero um tipo esquisito, poderia listar géneros de country, westerwing, blackboard music, rock & roll, lembrando a época em que eu usava dreadlocks, reggae, dancehall, mento, rocksteady, hip hop ou outros géneros como cumbia, exótica, brasileira, afrobeat, eletrónica, soul, não tem fim.
Como classificas a situação atual do graffiti na Espanha?
Pelo que vejo na internet, eu diria muito bom na parte dos writers que permanecem mas fraco nas novas gerações. Há já muito tempo que não vejo alguém que acabou de começar (que pinte há 5 anos) que me surpreenda.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers/artistas espanhóis?
Bendito Rage e Frikuno são obrigatórios, não porque fazem parte da crew mas porque, apesar dos obstáculos diários que o dia-a-dia lhes impõe, continuam ativos e surpreendem sempre com algo mais e com a qualidade das suas peças impecáveis. E, além deles, posso citar, sem entrar no muralismo, Ed Zumba, de Sevilha, Fear, de Valência, e Musa de Barcelona.
E de writers/artistas estrangeiros?
Com que writer / artista gostarias de fazer uma obra conjunta?

Estás ligado ao spray há 20 anos. Que conselho darias a quem está a começar no graffiti?
Conselho de uma pessoa mais velha, PERSISTÊNCIA COM CABEÇA. Existe uma diferença entre pintar aos 18 e pintar aos 40 e se eu te der um conselho será como se o teu pai te tivesse dado e eu não acho que vá ajudar muito. Eu não sei que percentagem não cai no esquecimento, eu ousaria dizer 5%, então qualquer conselho que eu desse seria desperdiçado.
Qual consideras o teu melhor trabalho, aquele que te deu mais luta e aquele que ainda tens que fazer?
Vou mais além, considero que os meus melhores trabalhos são os últimos. Nenhum me causa stress, não é uma luta para mim. Pelo contrário, quando pinto, fico mais bem-humorado, menos irritado, mais dependente da pintura, acho que nunca vou ser capaz de parar.
Quero fazer muito mais, chegar a um patamar como muitos têm, ser reconhecido em qualquer lugar, ser patrocinado por marcas, trabalhar APENAS a pintar bonecos e não outras encomendas.
Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
A curto prazo e como Kapone, um par de trabalhos publicitários com uma marca de cerveja e outra de tabaco e, como Fill in Culture, trabalhos para clientes que temos na agenda.
Como já disse, o ideal seria ir a eventos para pintar os meus bonecos fora da Espanha.
Tens alguma história engraçada que queiras contar?
Polícias que me pararam e que, depois de me pedirem toda a documentação, perceberam quem eu era, deram-me os parabéns e tiraram fotos comigo ou mostraram-me os seus perfis e dos seus chefes com bonecos meus.
Neste ponto, quero dizer que, apesar do que muitas pessoas pensam, tudo o que eu carrego no meu Instagram é ilegal, não tenho permissão especial e pinto durante o dia e com o rosto descoberto porque me faz parecer inocente. Estou ciente de que o graffiti tem que ser ilegal, pintar o que eu quiser, quando eu quiser e onde eu quiser, sem qualquer tipo de permissão e sem qualquer compensação. Para outras coisas, muralismo e decoração, trabalho para Fill in Culture.

My next interviewee arrives from neighboring Spain and it was another pleasant discovery on Instagram. Miguel Ángel Medina, artistically known as KAPONE, is a writer born in Valladolid currently residing in Vitoria-Gasteiz, where his elaborate characters are present in the markets and walls of the different neighborhoods of the city and are easily identifiable due to their geek look and by their humor. The writer, who defines himself as a lover of American underground comics (and that country's vintage culture), cites cartoonist Peter Bagge as one of his great influences. Kapone does not hide and it is not difficult to find him leaving his mark in broad daylight on the walls of the different districts of Gasteiz. First, tell us a little about yourself. I live in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Basque Country, I'm 40 years old, a family with two girls and a boy. The oldest, 7 years old, has already come to paint graffiti with me. I'm a very critical person with my work and that of others, I don't want a writer to live on income or what he was and I like to see a continuous evolution in myself and in others, preferably for the better (with the exception of those who made of their work an icon and use it as a repeat with variations, I love it). Even though everything has already been invented, I like to think that I give the viewer different things. What is the meaning of your tag? And the term "Take this" that you use in your works? My tag is Kapone simply because, more than 20 years ago, when I still hadn't painted walls, my colleagues and I decided one morning to start tagging in the street and we found ourselves, after lunch, with a name already thought out. It was a really quick thing, I created kapone, because of the letters it had and because of the old school scene of adding ONE at the end. Over time, I could have changed, but when I realized, everyone was calling me by that name. Take this is the name of my crew. Do you have art training? Yes, since I was little, I was taken to a neighborhood academy, with women, to learn how to paint in oil, still lifes, portraits and landscapes. I did an artistic bachelor's degree at the Valladolid School of Art. Then I moved to Madrid and studied illustration at Escuela de arte 10. When did your interest in graffiti begin and what were your influences at the time? I have been interested in Graffiti for 27 or 28 years, when I visited the city of Valladolid every week to see if the old school of the time had made a new piece. But the truth is that, at that time, my influence was directly based on underground comics, mainly American ones, like Peter Bage's. And let's just say that's why I focused on painting dolls (characters) instead of letters.
What are your crews?
From the beginning: I started signing for a crew of kids older than me called EXPANSIÓN CHINAL. At that time, I still didn't paint walls and everything consisted of taking over the city with an icon that was the face of a Chinese man with big teeth. Then I had others with different writers, but I'm still especially excited to have been part of CHACHO ROCKERS, with really funny graffiti, with amazing and nice people.
TAKE THIS is the current one, we are four members: Bendito Rage and Frikuno, (from Vitoria), Besdo Garsía (from Madrid) and myself. Whenever justified, I try to represent by adding or integrating the name of the crew.
On the other hand, in my daily life, I work as a muralist, making decorations for individuals and companies, as well as participatory workshops in schools and associations under the name of FILL IN CULTURE. (In this aspect, my co-worker and I always try to take the orders to our field and offer the customer a more personal and in our line work, leaving the standard murals).
How do you rate your style?
My style is not as underground as it was at the beginning. Today I would define it as Neo Pop. As a kind of collage and repetitions that can be deconstructed and reassembled at will.
Cinema, cartoons, advertising... Where do you get the influences for your works?
I like American culture and its dirty laundry, everything old, retro, vintage, forgotten, rancid, dark humor, satirical, the Simpsons and the like, the details that go unnoticed, the labels of products that no longer exist, the underground American comics and classics.
In how many countries have you painted? Any trip to Portugal?
I wish I had traveled more but due to life circumstances I had to turn down some pretty juicy destinations. Outside Spain, I painted in France, Belgium and Germany. I've only been to Portugal for leisure, but I would love to be able to go to an event and leave some of my dolls there.
What are your favorite places to paint? In the middle of the city is where more people can see them. A small wall that you can fit a doll on is what's worth. Do you paint with sketch or freestyle? With a sketch. I can improvise lines and colors but I like to play it safe, because my dolls aren't made first-class, I'm not satisfied with the first result, I can always take something else. There is work done previously. What plays on your playlist when you paint? Depends on the day and mood. Music is very important in my work and the doll I draw will come out one way or another depending on the music I have at that moment. Assuming that I hate formula radio, that I love music, and that I consider myself a weirdo, I could list country, westerwing, blackboard music, rock & roll genres, remembering the time when I wore dreadlocks, reggae, dancehall, mento , rocksteady, hip hop or other genres like cumbia, exotic, brazilian, afrobeat, electronic, soul, there is no end. How do you rate the current situation of graffiti in Spain? From what I see on the internet, I would say very good on the part of writers who remain and weaker in the new generations. It's been a long time since I've seen someone who has just started (who has been painting for 5 years) that surprises me. What is your top 3 Spanish writers/artists? Bendito Rage and Frikuno are mandatory, not because they are part of the crew but because, despite the daily obstacles that day-to-day imposes on them, they remain active and always surprise with something more and with the quality of their impeccable pieces. And, besides them, I can mention, without going into muralism, Ed Zumba, from Seville, Fear, from Valencia, and Musa from Barcelona.
What about foreign writers/artists?
Satone, Flying Förtress, 123klan. Which writer/artist would you like to do a joint work with? With Satone. You've been attached to the spray for 20 years. What advice would you give to someone new to graffiti? Advice from an older person, PERSISTENCE WITH HEAD. There is a difference between painting at 18 and painting at 40 and if I give you advice it will be as if your father gave it to you and I don't think it will help much. I don't know what percentage doesn't fall by the wayside, I would dare say 5%, so any advice I gave would be wasted. What do you consider your best work, the one that gave you the most struggle and the one you still have to do? I go further, I consider that my best works are the last ones. None cause me stress, it's not a struggle for me. On the contrary, when I paint, I am more humorous, less irritated, more dependent on painting, I don't think I'll ever be able to stop. I want to do much more, reach a level like many have, be recognized everywhere, be sponsored by brands, work ONLY painting dolls and not other orders. What are your future plans/projects? Short term and like Kapone, a couple of advertising jobs with a beer brand and a tobacco brand and, like Fill in Culture, works for clients that we have on the agenda. As I said, the ideal would be to go to events to paint my dolls outside Spain. Do you have a funny story you want to tell? Police officers who stopped me and who, after asking me for all the documentation, realized who I was, congratulated me and took pictures with me or showed me their profiles and those of their bosses with dolls of mine. At this point I want to say that despite what many people think, everything I upload to my Instagram is illegal, I don't have special permission and I paint during the day and with my face uncovered because it makes me look innocent. I am aware that graffiti has to be illegal, paint what I want, when I want and where I want, without any kind of permission and without any compensation.
