O meu próximo convidado chega do Brasil.
Everaldo Luiz é natural de São Paulo e os seus retratos carregam a força da negritude.
Numa visita recente a Portugal, o artista teve oportunidade de pintar na Galeria de Arte Urbana (GAU) da Calçada da Glória, em Lisboa.
Mas foi na Margem Sul que tive um contacto mais estreito com as suas obras. A convite de Rial, Everaldo passou pelo Seixal e deixou duas das suas peças espalhadas pelo concelho.
Até ao seu regresso, fiquem com a sua entrevista.
Antes de mais, fala-nos um pouco sobre ti. Sou Everaldo Luiz e iniciei minha trajetória no graffiti em 1998, inserido no movimento Hip Hop, pintando nas ruas de Bauru (interior de São Paulo).
Manifesto minha negritude a pintar retratos de pessoas negras, despertando a sua autoestima, empoderamento e visibilidade.
Tens formação em arte?
Não, sou um artista autodidata.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo(a) graffiti / street art e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
Por volta de 1997, conheci o Hip Hop na escola, através de um amigo. Meu país estava passando por uma mudança no modelo de ensino, então muitos jovens tiveram que mudar-se de escola. Sendo assim, tínhamos alunos de toda parte da cidade.
Encontrei esse amigo na altura, ele era B.Boy e me apresentou o Hip Hop, me mostrou os elementos (como DJ's, Mc's e Grafiteiros). Logo montamos uma crew chamada SoulDepa e, nesse ano, o Hip Hop nos abraçou muitos jovens, ficamos engajados e o movimento cresceu na cidade.
No início, comecei a fazer letras e por volta de 2000 comecei a fazer caras, caras de pessoas pretas (pois eram a maioria em minha volta) e logo isso se transformou em minha identidade.
Tive influência dos Gêmeos, Binho e Speto e comprava revistas para acompanhar o que estava acontecendo e ver novos trabalhos.

Quais são os teus locais / cidades favoritos para pintar? Comunidades e Avenidas.
Como é o teu processo criativo e onde vais buscar as inspirações para as tuas obras? Primeiro eu sinto qual é o sentimento que quero transmitir, logo faço um link com o tipo de expressão e depois procuro um olhar que me diz isso... Mas nem sempre as pessoas sentem o que eu realmente gostaria de transmitir.
A barra sobre os olhos dos teus rostos tem algum significado específico? Sim, minhas pinturas sempre trazem uma mensagem e essa mensagem se abriga na expressão, mas a alma está no olhar e isso faz com que na região do olho esteja a verdade.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle? Em sua maioria, sketch. Mas às vezes misturo as duas.
Preferes pintar sozinho ou em grupo? Não tenho preferência.

Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti e da street art em Portugal? Que diferenças encontras em relação ao Brasil? A cena em Portugal é muito boa, com muitos intercâmbios, isso enriquece e favorece a evolução. A cena no Brasil é bastante plural também, tem bastante crews, porém não rola tantos intercâmbios.
Uma das maiores diferenças que senti foi o preço dos materiais e a valorização dos artistas.
Com que artista / writer gostarias de fazer uma obra conjunta?
Não penso nisso, gosto de pintar com quem estiver a fim.
Pintas noutros suportes? Já fizeste alguma exposição? Sim, faço pinturas em café sobre telas, costumo fazer exposição com elas (everaldo_luiz_k.fe).
Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Pintar na França, Espanha e em Portugal novamente, tentar um festival e uma empena em um desses países, fotografar na África.

My next guest arrives from Brazil. Everaldo Luiz was born in São Paulo and his portraits carry the force of blackness. On a recent visit to Portugal, the artist had the opportunity to paint at the Galeria de Arte Urbana (GAU) on Calçada da Glória, in Lisbon. But it was on the South Bank that I had closer contact with his works. At the invitation of Rial, Everaldo passed through Seixal and left two of his pieces scattered around the county. Until his return, here is his interview.
First of all, tell us a little about yourself.
I'm Everaldo Luiz and I started my trajectory in graffiti in 1998, as part of the Hip Hop movement, painting in the streets of Bauru (São Paulo countryside).
I manifest my blackness by painting portraits of black people, awakening their self-esteem, empowerment and visibility.
Do you have art training?
No, I'm a self-taught artist.
When did your interest in graffiti / street art begin and what were your influences at the time?
Around 1997, I got to know Hip Hop at school, through a friend. My country was going through a change in the teaching model, so many young people had to change schools. So we had students from all over the city.
I met this friend at the time, he was B.Boy and he introduced me to Hip Hop, showed me the elements (like DJ's, MC's and Graffiti artists). Soon we set up a crew called SoulDepa and, that year, Hip Hop embraced many young people, we were engaged and the movement grew in the city. In the beginning, I started doing lyrics and around 2000 I started making faces, black people faces (because they were the majority around me) and soon that became my identity.
I was influenced by the Gêmeos, Binho and Speto and I bought magazines to follow what was happening and see new works.
In how many countries have you painted?
Brazil and Portugal.
What are your favorite places/cities to paint?
Communities and Avenues.
What is your creative process like and where do you get inspiration for your works?
First I feel what feeling I want to convey, then I make a link with the type of expression and then I look for a look that tells me that... But people don't always feel what I would really like to convey.
Does the bar over the eyes of your faces have any specific meaning?
Yes, my paintings always bring a message and this message is sheltered in the expression, but the soul is in the look and that makes the truth in the eye region.
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?
Mostly sketch. But sometimes I mix the two.
Do you prefer to paint alone or in a group?
I have no preference.

How do you describe the current panorama of graffiti and street art in Portugal? What differences do you find in relation to Brazil?
The scene in Portugal is very good, with many exchanges, this enriches and favors evolution. The scene in Brazil is also quite plural, there are a lot of crews, but there are not so many exchanges.
One of the biggest differences I felt was the price of materials and the appreciation of the artists.
What is your top 3 of Portuguese artists/writers?
What about foreign artists/writers?
Which artist/writer would you like to do a joint work with?
I don't think about it, I like to paint with whoever is in the mood.
Do you paint on other supports? Have you ever had an exhibition?
Yes, I do coffee paintings on canvas, I usually do exhibitions with them (everaldo_luiz_k.fe).
What are your future plans/projects?
Painting in France, Spain and Portugal again, trying a festival and a gable in one of these countries, shooting in Africa.
