Quando viajo pela A1 na zona do Porto, a minha atenção é sempre cativada pelo Bart Simpson da BLUBLA CREW e pelos characters enormes do meu novo entrevistado.
Natural da Cidade Invicta, DUB é um artista multifacetado com um percurso académico ligado às Artes e formação em Animação por Computador e Efeitos Especiais.
A pintar desde 1997, este membro dos MTS e dos NUIT é conhecido pelos seus characters com um estilo negro e características facilmente identificáveis e que DUB deixa marcados nas Auto-Estradas, muros, abandonados e em tatuagens, a sua ocupação principal.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
O meu interesse pelo graffiti começou por volta de 1997 e, nessa altura, não havia internet, não havia muitas revistas e as poucas que existiam eram nacionais. Então, as minhas influências foram as pessoas que me incentivaram a pintar.
A crew chamava-se GPE (Graffiti Posed Elements) e, na altura, eram três rapazes que estavam a começar a entrar na cultura hip hop e faziam um pouco de tudo (break, MC, graffiti ...). Eu fui atraído pelo graffiti, porque sempre desenhei personagens e queria tentar fazer o mesmo em grande escala.
Como era a cena no graffiti quando começaste?
Opá, eu sou do Porto e aqui fazíamos graff porque gostávamos, não havia ninguém pra copiar ou te influenciar diretamente... fábricas, street, não havia grande distinção, queríamos era pintar.
Às vezes, víamos peças na rua e só quando íamos sair à noite a festas de hip hop e levávamos os nossos books de fotografias e cadernos com tags e projetos é que percebíamos quem era quem.
Lembro-me que uma vez também vieram de Lisboa os PRM, pintar numa festa de Drum, e vi o Youth a pintar ao vivo pela primeira vez. Foi magia pra mim nessa altura.
Pertences a alguma crew?
Faço parte de um crew chamado MTS há praticamente 10 anos. É dos crews mais antigos do Porto, mas que neste momento está parado. Temos membros em França e esses sim tão sempre a mexer.
Mais recentemente tenho outro crew chamado NUIT que, pelo contrário, tá super ativo.
És conhecido pelas tuas personagens de grandes dimensões. O lettering também te atrai?
Ei pá, realmente cartoons e personagens são a minha praia. Letterings já fiz muitos também, mas ou foi em contexto de crew ou pra destressar de fazer só personagens e variar um pouco.
Cada macaco no seu galho e sou feliz a pintar cartoons. Ou só mesmo a pintar qualquer merda.
Em quantos países já pintaste?
Não sou proativo a pintar fora do meu país ou até mesmo fora da minha cidade. A minha zona (grande Porto) é onde vês a maior parte dos meus graffs.
Sempre que vou de férias pinto qualquer coisa e já pintei em 4 ou 5 países nesse contexto.
Já participaste em festivais de graffiti? Houve algum que te marcou em particular?
Nos últimos 10 anos já participei em diversas exibições e festivais de graffiti e há um que me marca particularmente, porque já vou há uns anos e já tem algumas edições, que é o Pútrica.
É organizado pelos meus amigos RUA e, normalmente, vamos quase sempre os mesmos artistas, o que acabou por se tornar uma família e quase uma festa privada. É feito numa pequena localidade perto do Porto, chamada Freamunde, e está inserido nas festas da cidade. Adoro!
Preferes a máquina de tatuagens ou a lata de spray?
Para mim são coisas completamente diferentes, tattoo é dinheiro e pagar as contas e graff é liberdade e having fun.
Tatuagem para mim tem tudo a ver com o que o cliente quer e tu conseguires concretizar a visão de alguém com a tua arte.
Graff para mim é liberdade, é pintar o que eu quiser, onde eu quiser, sem querer agradar a ninguém e sem regras.
Também faço graff num contexto profissional para clientes e aí claro que já tenho algumas regras.
Também pintas em tela. Tens planos para uma próxima exposição?
Pinto tudo, também pinto telas. Às vezes pra clientes, outras vezes porque vou fazer uma exposição ou qualquer coisa desse género.
Normalmente convidam-me para expor em qualquer lado e a partir daí penso num tema e desenvolvo artworks pra essa situação em específico.
A mais recente que fiz foi numa loja de graffiti supplies no Porto chamada Norte Color e chamou-se "Snakepit". Ainda tenho algumas telas e merchandise disponíveis.
O que puxa por ti hoje em dia? Street bombing, train bombing ou wall of fame?
Opá, já fui grande bomber, já pintei muitos comboios, já pintei muito street, mas hoje em dia a minha vida mudou muito.
Não tenho tanto tempo para bombar, vou de vez em quando pra matar o vício. Mas pinto todas as semanas, nem que seja uma fábrica, uma linha de comboio ou um muro legal... Ultimamente cenas mais fáceis, confesso.
Qual foi o sítio mais incrível em que já pintaste?
Difícil responder a isso, depois de tantas peças, tantos lugares, tantas pessoas que conheci e que me trouxeram bons momentos... Isso é o que me deixa boas recordações, pintar com os meus, beber umas minis, fumar uns canhões e fazer uma churrascada enquanto pintamos... nada melhor.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
Pinto muito mais freestyle, porque tou sempre a desenhar pra tattoos e clientes e isso esgota-me um pouco.
Quando vou pintar, é o que sai... algumas vezes desenho e tb levo projeto, mas é mais raro nos dias que correm.
O que toca na tua playlist quando pintas?
A minha playlist é muito variada, mas essencialmente hip-hop tuga, algum grime, drum'n'bass... tudo o que tenha um bom beat convence-me fácil.
Como descreves o panorama atual do graffiti em Portugal?
Sinceramente... fraco, principalmente na minha cidade.
Por aqui, quem bomba a sério são os velhotes de crews mais antigas, o resto é pessoal que vai aparecendo e desaparecendo muito rápido... não vejo muita consistência a bombar e acho que esta geração nova tá muito preocupada se são bombers ou street artists, quando, na realidade, se deviam preocupar em pintar mais, falar menos e divertirem-se.

Que diferenças encontras entre o Norte, a grande Lisboa e o Sul?
Para mim, esse tipo de diferenças são basicamente geográficas.
No Porto chove imenso no inverno e é muita chunga para pintar. Lisboa é muito mais fixe nesse aspeto e o Algarve ainda melhor.
Lisboa tem comboio a girar no meio da cidade e no Porto isso não acontece, são vibes diferentes.
No Algarve tá sempre muito calor, adoro pintar lá, mas as peças ficam todas queimadas pelo sol de um ano pro outro!
Basicamente, são essas as diferenças. As pessoas são sempre pessoas em qualquer lado, não vejo grandes diferenças.
Qual é o teu top 3 de writers / artistas portugueses?
Pá, não avalio o graff pela arte em si e acho que muitos writers não são artistas, são só writers!
Nesse aspeto, tenho de dar pontos ao getting up, à longevidade, ao ritmo e à persistência e se queres um top 3 de norte a sul: Fynd, Risko e Sen.
E de writers / artistas estrangeiros?
Internacionais são muitas as minhas referências, mais relacionadas com o tipo de trabalho que faço... Gent 48, Arsek & Erase, Grito de bcn... tantos que nomear só 3 é injusto.
Qual é aquela que consideras a tua melhor obra, aquela que te deu mais luta e aquela que ainda te falta fazer?
Pra mim, o meu próximo projeto é sempre no que tou mais concentrado, porque acho que faz parte da mente artística a evolução, o que vem a seguir... os que mais gozo me deram fazer foram a nível profissional, projetos de muitas semanas, grandes empreitadas que nunca mais acabavam e é sempre um gosto ver esse tipo de projetos finalizados.
A bombar o que sempre gostei mais foi de pintar comboios, acabar a missão e, no dia a seguir, vê-los a chegar à estação, daylight... Ganda feeling mesmo.
Quais são os teus planos / projetos futuros?
Os meus planos são fazer exatamente o mesmo que venho a fazer há mais de 20 anos... continuar a pintar, desenvolver os meus skills, divertir-me... tatuar muito por esse mundo fora... Basicamente, continuar a riscar como se não houvesse amanhã.
Tens alguma história engraçada para contar?
Quem já pinta há tanto tempo tem sempre histórias engraçadas pra contar... o meu filme que acontece mais vezes é tar a pintar e aparecer alguém random que me pergunta se tenho autorização... eu digo sempre que tenho e pergunto "porquê, és o dono?"... quando eles dizem que sim é engraçado.

Os props são, no geral, prós meus... que pintam comigo, que gostam de mim e do meu trabalho, que apoiam e me permitem viver disto há não sei quantos anos... thank you all, ainda tenho muitos coelhos na cartola!

When I travel along the A1 in the Porto area, my attention is always captivated by Bart Simpson from BLUBLA CREW and by the huge characters of my new interviewee.
Born in Porto, DUB is a multifaceted artist with an academic career linked to the Arts and training in Computer Animation and Special Effects.
Painting since 1997, this member of MTS and NUIT is known for his characters with a black style and easily identifiable features that DUB leaves marked on highways, walls, abandoned buildings and in tattoos, his main occupation.
When did your interest in graffiti start and what were your influences at the time?
My interest in graffiti started around 1997 and, at that time, there was no internet, there weren't many magazines and the few that existed were national. So, my influences were the people who encouraged me to paint.
The crew was called GPE (Graffiti Posed Elements) and, at the time, there were three guys who were starting to get into hip hop culture and did a little bit of everything (break, MC, graffiti...). I was attracted to graffiti because I've always drawn characters and I wanted to try to do the same on a large scale.
What was the graffiti scene like when you started?
Oops, I'm from Porto and here we did graff because we liked it, there was no one to copy or directly influence you... factories, street, there wasn't much distinction, we wanted to paint.
Sometimes we saw plays on the street and it was only when we went out at night to hip hop parties and took our photo books and notebooks with tags and projects that we realized who was who.
I remember that once the PRM also came from Lisbon to paint at a Drum party, and I saw Youth painting live for the first time. It was magic for me then.
Do you belong to any crew?
I've been part of a crew called MTS for almost 10 years. It's one of the oldest crews in Porto, but at the moment it's stopped. We have members in France and those are always moving. More recently I have another crew called NUIT which, on the contrary, is super active.
You are known for your oversized characters. Does lettering also attract you?
Hey man, cartoons and characters are really my thing. Letterings I've done a lot too, but either it was in a crew context or to take the stress out of doing just characters and vary it a bit.
Each monkey on its branch and I'm happy painting cartoons. Or just painting some shit.
In how many countries have you painted?
I'm not proactive about painting outside my country or even outside my city. My area (greater Porto) is where you see most of my graffs.
Whenever I go on vacation I paint something and I've painted in 4 or 5 countries in that context.
Have you participated in graffiti festivals? Was there any that stood out to you in particular?
In the last 10 years I have participated in several graffiti exhibitions and festivals and there is one that particularly stands out to me, because I have been going there for a few years and there are already a few editions, which is Pútrica.
It is organized by my friends RUA and, normally, we go almost always with the same artists, which ended up becoming a family and almost a private party. It is made in a small town near Porto, called Freamunde, and is part of the city's festivities. I adore!
Do you prefer the tattoo machine or the spray can?
For me they are completely different things, tattoo is money and paying the bills and graff is freedom and having fun.
Tattooing for me is all about what the client wants and you being able to fulfill someone's vision with your art.
Graff for me is freedom, it's painting what I want, where I want, without wanting to please anyone and without rules.
I also do graff in a professional context for clients and then of course I already have some rules.
Also paints on canvas. Do you have plans for an upcoming exhibition?
I paint everything, I also paint canvases. Sometimes for clients, other times because I'm going to do an exhibition or something like that.
Usually I am invited to exhibit somewhere and from there I think of a theme and develop artwork for that specific situation.
The most recent one I did was at a graffiti supplies store in Porto called Norte Color and it was called "Snakepit". I still have some canvases and merchandise available.
What moves you today? Street bombing, train bombing or wall of fame?
Oops, I've been a great bomber, I've painted many trains, I've painted a lot of street, but nowadays my life has changed a lot.
I don't have that much time to pump, I go from time to time to kill the addiction. But I paint every week, even if it's a factory, a train line or a nice wall... Lately, easier scenes, I confess.
What's the most amazing place you've ever painted?
It's hard to answer that, after so many pieces, so many places, so many people that I've met and that have brought me good times... barbecue while we paint... nothing better.
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?
I paint much more freestyle, because I'm always drawing for tattoos and clients and that exhausts me a little. When I go to paint, that's what comes out... sometimes I draw and I also bring a project, but it's rarer these days.
What plays on your playlist when you paint?
My playlist is very varied, but essentially Portuguese hip-hop, some grime, drum'n'bass... anything with a good beat convinces me easily.
How would you describe the current scenario of graffiti in Portugal?
Honestly... weak, especially in my city. Around here, it's the old guys from the older crews who are really pumping, the rest are people who appear and disappear very quickly... I don't see much consistency to pump and I think this new generation is very concerned about whether they are bombers or street artists , when, in reality, they should be concerned with painting more, talking less and having fun.
Steaks are at the butchery, oh boy!
What differences do you find between the North, greater Lisbon and the South?
For me, those kinds of differences are basically geographic.
In Porto it rains a lot in winter and it's a lot of pain to paint. Lisbon is much cooler in that regard and the Algarve is even better.
Lisbon has trains turning in the middle of the city and in Porto that doesn't happen, there are different vibes.
It's always very hot in the Algarve, I love to paint there, but the pieces are all sunburned from one year to the next!
Basically, these are the differences. People are always people anywhere, I don't see big differences.
What is your top 3 Portuguese writers / artists?
Man, I don't evaluate graff by the art itself and I think that many writers are not artists, they are just writers!
In that regard, I have to give points to getting up, longevity, rhythm and persistence and if you want a top 3 from north to south: Fynd, Risko and Sen.
What about foreign writers / artists?
My references are international, more related to the type of work I do... Gent 48, Arsek & Erase, Grito de bcn... so many that naming only 3 is unfair.
What is the one that you consider your best work, the one that gave you the most struggle and the one that you still have to do?
For me, my next project is always what I'm most focused on, because I think evolution is part of the artistic mind, what comes next... , great undertakings that never ended and it is always a pleasure to see these types of projects completed.
What I always liked most was painting trains, finishing the mission and, the next day, seeing them arriving at the station, daylight... Great feeling really.
What are your future plans/projects?
My plans are to do exactly the same thing I've been doing for over 20 years... continue to paint, develop my skills, have fun... tattoo a lot around the world... Basically, continue to draw like if there was no tomorrow.
Do you have any funny stories to tell?
Those who have been painting for so long always have funny stories to tell... my most frequent film is I'm painting and someone random appears and asks me if I have permission... I always say I do and ask "why, are you the owner?"... when they say yes it's funny.

The greetings are, in general, for my partners... who paint with me, who like me and my work, who support and allow me to live from this for I don't know how many years... thank you all, I still have a lot of rabbits in my hat!
