frAme01 foi o primeiro writer que conheci pessoalmente, já lá vão quatro anos. Andava eu a fotografar num abandonado de Sesimbra quando o "apanhei" a pintar com Mojojojo.
A surpresa valeu para os dois, porque, à conta do nome do meu Instagram, o writer pensava que eu era estrangeiro.
Natural de Moçambique, há muito que frAme01 está ligado à Margem Sul, tendo feito parte da mítica crew MDK.
O gosto pela arte nas mais diversas vertentes levaram-no à tatuagem. Mas é o spray que realmente o faz vibrar.
Para os apreciadores do seu trabalho, são várias as peças espalhadas pelo Seixal e concelhos vizinhos.
Combinada há já algum tempo, esta entrevista acabou por ser feita junto ao mar, na Associação Arroz de Polvo, outro projeto do writer.
Como surgiu o teu tag?
Veio de uma banda desenhada que eu tinha, que eu fazia quando era puto. Era um personagem, o FRAME01. Era assim tipo sci-fi, super-heróis.
E depois, como o meu curso também era Audiovisual e Multimédia e fazia animação, era tudo à base de frames, né. E há o frame 01, que é o primeiro frame da cena.
Quando começou o teu interesse pelo graffiti e quais foram as tuas influências na altura?
O início foi em meados de 97/98. Eu morava em Moçambique, mas vinha cá sempre em férias e via aí as cenas nas paredes e, ao mesmo tempo, o pessoal da minha rua andava metido nisso. E quando souberam que eu estava cá, numa dessas férias, pegaram-me e disseram "vamos comprar aí umas latas, tens que fazer aí uns desenhos na parede com a gente, a gente só faz letras e tu fazes desenhos altamente". Então, foi isso e depois pegou.
E depois um gajo também via aí os graffs nos comboios e nas paredes da malta conhecida old school e essa cena puxou. E sempre que eu vinha cá, até vir para cá de vez, continuei. É isso.
Eu via muito a cena de Lisboa, do pessoal conhecido, aqueles old schoolers do costume. Mas aqui o que eu curtia mesmo ver eram cenas do Clear, do Tape e mais o Image. Eram coisas assim mais elaboradas. O Clear tinha aquele combo de bonecos e lettering e o Tape também fazia aí uns letterings à maneira. Foi mais ou menos isso.
Depois, da minha crew, havia o Pan que também fazia uns bonecos. E havia o Sektor e o Pofer que eram tipo réguas humanas, como o Mosaik de agora. Era mais bombing mas os gajos faziam tudo certinho. E eram malucos, faziam rooftops e essas cenas todas.
Continuas nalguma crew?
Neste momento, já não tenho crews nenhumas.
No início, eram os MDK. Depois os MDK com os Clann lá da A-line (zona de Alverca, Póvoa de Santa Iria), que eram uma data de gente.
Entretanto, houve aí uma pequena crew que eu fiz com o Skran, o Acer, mais o Vespa, que eram os ZKs. Mas isso não durou, o pessoal foi-se separando e cada um seguiu a sua vida.
Em quantos países já pintaste?
Portugal, Moçambique, Espanha e Inglaterra.
Também tiveste uma passagem pela tatuagem. Isso está posto de lado? Preferes o graff ou a tatuagem?
Estou num período sabático... escolhia o graff, sem dúvida, 100%.
O que é que te move hoje em dia?
Hoje em dia, o que me move é pintar. O pintar com amigos.
Prefiro abandonados. O Hall of fame não, porque há muita "amizade" e um gajo acaba por não pintar nada. Se a coisa corre bem entre "amigos", um gajo acaba por falar mais do que pintar. Prefiro mesmo estar focado num sítio abandonado, com o meu som e com um bom amigo ou dois e, pronto, está feito. Está feito o dia.
Onde vais buscar as ideias para as tuas peças?
Epá, as ideias para as minhas peças dependem do mood em que estou. Normalmente, muitas delas não têm assim nenhuma mensagem especial, é mesmo só fazer por fazer e o mais complexo possível, que é para um gajo se superar sempre e ser um bom desenho. É basicamente isso.
E depois as influências que eu vou tirar para o desenho dependem da linha gráfica que eu estou a seguir na altura ou que eu quero experimentar também.
Pintas com sketch ou freestyle?
As últimas vezes foi freestyle.
Mas, normalmente, venho com umas produções assim mais pensadas, venho sempre com um sketchezinho, com uma coisa já impressa, e é a partir daí.
Com que malta gostas de pintar?
O Skran, o L7, o Trafic. Às vezes, havia aí umas misturas com o pessoal dos Thunders. Pintar com o Eko é sempre fixe, o Eko é uma granda malha.
Qual é a lata de que mais gostas?
Gosto muito das 94, mas também gosto muito das hardcore, depende. Mas as 94, regra geral, são fixes.
E a playlist?
Metal e rock.
Segundo sei, também tocas...
Já tive aí os meus tempos com bandas. Ainda vou tocando, mas sozinho. Só para curtir um bocadinho.
Como classificas o graffiti em Portugal neste momento?
Há muita falsa atitude aí, há bué a cena pseudo-académica que agora entra no mundo e é malta mais da street art a dar entender que precisas de um canudo para pintar na parede. Muitos servem-se da onda do graff oldschool, dizem que surgiram do graff e não surgiram coisa nenhuma. Mas, pronto, isso é a cena mais comercial da coisa.
Entretanto, o graffiti de hoje em dia... o que é que eu vejo aí... é bombing. Malta a crossar-se uns aos outros, sem respeito nenhum. E a malta que não se conhece de lado de nenhum, não tem beefs, e crossam-se assim à toa.
Quer dizer que a geração de agora não tem respeito nenhum por nada, é a geração do instantâneo. Ou querem ser gangsters ou querem ser bué conhecidos no Instagram. São putos e também há graúdos que viraram putos e têm esse tipo de atitudes. Mas, pronto, cada um é como cada qual.
Atualmente, graffiti há pouco. Há a malta de antigamente, que continua no caminho, e depois há aqueles que entram no comboio, como passageiros, e depois saem.
Que conselho darias ao pessoal que está a começar a pintar?
Que leiam a história do graff. Que saibam quem começou isto, quem continuou depois dos que começaram e que tenham respeito pela cena.
Quais são os três nomes que destacas?
Daqui da Margem Sul, o Tape quando decide pintar.
E lá fora?
Está uma embrulhada geral e eu já não sei quem é quem. Como eu não sigo graff, não sei o que é se passa, o que me aparece mais no feed é mais street art. É uma misturada, parece que é tudo malta saída das Belas Artes, de canudo na mão.
Fazem coisas giras e tal, mas da malta da essência antiga, que andavam aí e faziam bombing e cenas do caraças, já não me lembro de nada. Muito do pessoal cresceu, têm as suas empresas, as suas marcas e têm de fazer pela vida. Portanto, acabam por ser um bocado eclipsados por essa onda nova de street art que anda por aí.
Mas há os que continuam a ter a essência. Por exemplo, os SML mais uns quantos gajos com quem eu pintei em Londres há uns anos atrás. Por cá, destaco o Mosaik e o Eko. O resto, para ser sincero, não vejo e não ligo.
Qual é que achas que é a tua melhor obra?
Nenhuma. Eu gosto no início, nos primeiros três dias, e depois já não gosto.
Tens alguma história para partilhar?
Já tive bué encontros com a polícia, mas foi sempre tranquilo. O pessoal fugia todo e eu continuava a pintar. Acho que é por causa da cena de ser bonecos. Os polícias começavam a falar comigo, se eu estudava artes, a curtirem bué, nunca me chatearam. Só me tiraram as latas umas duas vezes e tive de ir buscá-las à esquadra uns tempos mais tarde.
Uma história mesmo engraçada foi uma vez ter de fugir em Vale de Milhaços. Estávamos a pintar um muro de uma vivenda qualquer e apareceu um cota que começou aos berros, mandou um tiro de caçadeira para o ar, saltou o muro, foi atrás de nós e eu tive de carregar a namorada de um dos nossos ao colo, a correr. Nas vivendas, já sabes, há sempre malta com um trabuco. Fiquei meio assustado, foi correr até saírem os bofes fora.
Quais são os teus planos /projetos futuros?
Continuar a pintar, a minha vida é pintar e desenhar. Continuar com algum trabalho dentro desta área.
E surfar, surfar bué. Continuar a ter forças para surfar.
E, se possível, mudar-me para outro país, que isto já não está a dar.

frAme01 was the first writer I met personally, four years ago. I was photographing in an abandoned building in Sesimbra when I "caught" him painting with Mojojojo. The surprise was worth it for both of them, because, based on my Instagram name, the writer thought I was a foreigner. Born in Mozambique, frAme01 has been linked to the South Bank for a long time, having been part of the mythical MDK crew. The taste for art in the most diverse aspects led him to tattooing. But it's the spray that really gets it buzzing. For those who appreciate his work, there are several pieces scattered throughout Seixal and neighboring municipalities. Arranged some time ago, this interview ended up being done by the sea, at Associação Arroz de Polvo, another project of the writer.
How did your tag come about?
It came from a comic I had, which I made when I was a kid. It was a character, FRAME01. It was like sci-fi, superheroes.
And then, as my course was also Audiovisual and Multimedia and I did animation, it was all based on frames, you know. And then there's frame 01, which is the first frame of the scene.
When did your interest in graffiti start and what were your influences at the time?
The beginning was in the middle of 97/98. I used to live in Mozambique, but I always came here on vacation and saw the scenes on the walls there and, at the same time, people from my street were involved in that. And when they found out that I was here, on one of those holidays, they picked me up and said "we're going to buy some cans, you have to make some drawings on the wall with us, we only make letters and you make high drawings". So that was it and then it caught on.
And then a guy also saw the graffs on the trains and on the walls of the famous old school crowd and that scene pulled. And whenever I came here, until I came here for good, I kept going. That's it.
I saw the Lisbon scene a lot, the famous people, the usual old schoolers. But here, what I really enjoyed seeing were scenes from Clear, Tape and more from Image. It was more elaborate stuff like that. Clear had that dolls and lettering combo and Tape also did some lettering there. That was more or less it.
After my crew, there was Pan who also made dolls. And then there was Sektor and Pofer who were like human rulers, like Mosaik now. It was more bombing but the guys did everything right. And they were crazy, they did rooftops and all these scenes.
Are you still in any crew?
Right now, I don't have any crews anymore.
In the beginning, it was the MDK. Then the MDK with the Clann from A-line (Alverca area, Póvoa de Santa Iria), which were a lot of people.
However, there was a small crew that I made with Skran, Acer, plus Vespa, which were the ZKs. But that didn't last, people split up and each went on with their own lives.
In how many countries have you painted?
Portugal, Mozambique, Spain and England.
You also had a pass through the tattoo. Is this set aside? Do you prefer the graff or the tattoo?
I'm on a sabbatical... I'd choose the graff, without a doubt, 100%.
What moves you today?
Nowadays, what moves me is painting. Painting with friends.
I prefer abandoned. Not the Hall of Fame, because there's a lot of "friendship" and a guy ends up not painting anything. If things go well between "friends", a guy ends up talking more than painting. I really prefer to be focused in an abandoned place, with my sound and a good friend or two and, presto, it's done. The day is done.
Where do you get the ideas for your pieces?
Man, the ideas for my pieces depend on the mood I'm in. Usually, many of them don't have any special message, it's just doing it for the sake of it and as complex as possible, which is for a guy to always excel and be a good drawing. That's basically it.
And then the influences that I'm going to take for the drawing depend on the graphic line that I'm following at the time or that I want to try as well.
Do you paint with sketch or freestyle?
The last few times it was freestyle.
But, normally, I come with productions like this that are more thoughtful, I always come with a little sketch, with something already imprinted, and it's from there.
What guys do you like to paint with?
Skran, L7, Trafic. Sometimes there were mixes with the Thunders crew. Painting with Eko is always cool, Eko is a great mesh.
Which can do you like the most?
I like the 94 a lot, but I also like the hardcore a lot, it depends. But the 94, as a general rule, are cool.
And the playlist? Metal and rock. As far as I know, you play too... I've had my days with bands there. I'm still playing, but alone. Just to enjoy it a bit. How do you classify graffiti in Portugal right now? There's a lot of false attitude there, there's a lot of the pseudo-academic scene that is now entering the world and it's more street art people implying that you need a straw to paint on the wall. Many make use of the oldschool graff wave, saying they came from graff and nothing came of it. But, well, that's the most commercial scene of the thing. However, today's graffiti... what I see there... is bombing. Guys crossing each other, with no respect. And the guys that you don't know from anywhere, don't have beefs, and cross each other like that for nothing. It means that today's generation has no respect for anything, it's the snapshot generation. Either they want to be gangsters or they want to be famous on Instagram. They are pissed off and there are also grown-ups who have become pissed off and have that kind of attitude. But then, each one is like each other. Currently, there is little graffiti. There are the old folks who continue on the way, and then there are those who get on the train as passengers and then get off. What advice would you give to people who are starting to paint? Let them read the history of the graff. Let them know who started it, who continued after those who started it, and have respect for the scene. What are the three names that stand out? Mosaik, Exas and Nomen. From here on the South Bank, Tape when he decides to paint.
And outside?
It's a general mess and I don't know who's who anymore. Since I don't follow graff, I don't know what's going on, what appears to me most in the feed is more street art. It's a mixed bag, it seems like it's all people coming out of Fine Arts, straw in hand.
They do cool things and such, but the old-fashioned people, who were there and did bombing and shit, I don't remember anything. A lot of people have grown up, they have their companies, their brands and they have to make a living. Therefore, they end up being somewhat eclipsed by this new wave of street art that is going around. But there are those who continue to have the essence. For example, the SML plus a few guys I painted with in London a few years ago. Here, I highlight Mosaik and Eko. The rest, to be honest, I don't see and don't care.
What do you think is your best work?
None. I like it at first, the first three days, and then I don't like it anymore.
Do you have a story to share?
I've had a lot of encounters with the police, but it was always peaceful. People all fled and I continued to paint. I think it's because of the puppetry scene. The policemen started talking to me, if I was studying arts, enjoying it a lot, they never bothered me. They only took the cans away from me a couple of times and I had to go get them at the police station a while later.
A really funny story was once having to flee in Vale de Milhaços. We were painting a wall of some house and a guy appeared who started screaming, fired a shot into the air, jumped the wall, went after us and I had to carry the girlfriend of one of our people on my lap, the run. In the villas, as you know, there are always people with a trebuchet. I was kind of scared, I ran until my breath came out.
What are your future plans/projects?
Keep painting, my life is painting and drawing. Continue with some work within this area.
And surf, surf a lot. Continue to have the strength to surf. And, if possible, moving to another country, as this is no longer working.
