Atualizado: 1 de jul. de 2023

PT

ENG The second guest for the quick interviews is the designer Cristina Arvana. The first time I came into contact with her art was at a fair at the Quimiparque business park, in Barreiro (her hometown). Later, enchanted by the delicacy of her works, I decided to commission a work from her. Having gone through her most recent exhibition, it is now time to interview her.

Cristina Arvana

She's from Barreiro. Designer by profession, completed a degree in Fashion Design at the Faculty of Architecture of Lisbon, in 2002. After 15 years in the profession, decided to "give life" to a lifelong dream, the illustration and graphic design. She likes to illustrate essences, tell stories and record emotions and translate them into her graphic universe.

How did you go from fashion to illustration? I have always loved illustrating and drawing. Even when I was only doing fashion design, designing patterns and graphics for prints was always one of my favorite tasks. On the other hand, the passion for children's illustration has always been a constant.

When I was invited to illustrate the first story, I couldn't resist and embarked on the adventure! When the opportunity (and the courage) arose, I decided to change my life and embrace this "arvie land" project of mine. I like to call it creative studio, because this is the trait that unites the projects I develop, creativity and visual expression.

What material do you prefer to work with?

This question is difficult, as I love to explore and mix different techniques and materials. I always try to learn more and not cling too much to what I already master.

Perhaps the favorites are graphite, China ink, watercolors and inks. I love mixing and using them on different supports.

Where do you get the inspiration for your works?

I am inspired by nature, its colors, shapes and textures, but essentially the emotions and feelings they provoke. I love the simple details of life. A smile, the sunlight, the shadows of trees and flowers, the sea, a tear...

How many exhibitions have you done?

In the last two years I participated in the Exhibition "Ver ao perto" integrated in the Illustration Festival of the Municipality of Setúbal, with several works in the area of editorial illustration. Last September, I had the pleasure of opening my first "solo" exhibition at the Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium, in Barreiro (the city where I was born). In this show I was able to freely explore various techniques between painting, ceramics and illustration.

What are your future plans/projects?

As a rule, I don't make long-term plans. One of the things I like most about being a freelancer is having the freedom and privilege to do very different projects, covering several areas that I love. But ceramics is something I really want to explore and learn more about. I'm starting to learn mural painting (and loving it) and a future project/dream would be to learn to tattoo!
